I wouldn't mind betting that when the academy issue has died down, that site stops being updated!

Why can't people just accept that they have lost and move on, instead of dragging the issue out and boring everyone to tears with their petty agendas?

I'm just glad I'm leaving this year. Have always thought it was a rubbish idea in the first place.

The start of Britain's decline dates from the abolition of Grammar Schools and the introduction of comprehensive education. Nowhere is this more true than in Barrow, which had a truly egalitarian system, with cumulative assessment up to 11 (rather than a once only 11+), and the opportunity to transfer (up and down) between Grammar and Secondary Modern at 13 and 16.

In fact Jim, I believe the model of which you talk was held up as a leading light for all others to follow. Unfortunately thats history though.

I should also add that the existence of Boys' Grammar and Girls' Grammar side by side created many excellent opportunities for enjoyable recreation, such as watching the girls play tennis, plus the occasional romantic assignment behind the bike sheds!

What an amazing coincidence that a member of Barrow Borough Council elected on an single issue, anti academy policy should 'happen' across this 'interesting and shocking' propoganda website then post it on a public forum.

Isn't life weird eh?

All the 1944 education act did was create a tripartite system which ligitimated class inequality. the 11+ was rigged from the start and only benefitted those with money, ala middle classes. All grammer schools and academies are a joke, nothing is wrong with how everything is currently done....i give the academy 4 years tops!

It was e-mailed to a colleague Dale, some potentially dodgy stuff on there that I certainly couldn't or wouldn't say. My guess is its a member of staff, you only need to talk to some to find out whats going on.

The first part my friend is the biggest pile of tripe ever posted, my parents are from very humble working class backgrounds (one born and brought up in the barrow Island flats, the other parentless from a very tender age) with barely a halfpenny to run together, both worked hard and went to Grammar and Tech, both had very many friends from similar backgrounds. Please explain how a huge proportion of youngsters from poor backgrounds went on to succeed at the Tech or Grammar schools if it only benefitted those with money, my family and the majority of thier friends at the time did not.

Obviously I agree with you about academies.

I speak with my next door neighbours about the academy and they both happen to be teachers at secondary schools in Barrow. They support the academy as they say it is the only way forward The present schools are not fit for purpose. OSANFS have the potential to do more damage to the childrens education than any academy ever would. As for OSANFS mouthpiece Roger Titcombe well don,t even go there. The first 3 letters of his second name sum him up. Own personal agenda from a man with a chip on his shoulder IMO. The ones shouting the loudest as per usual are those that are against it. The overwhelming majority of Barrovians never signed the petition against it and it is the silent vast majority who are being dignified, not shouting their mouths off, as they realise the academy is coming it WILL happen so everyone has to put there differences behind them work together and be positive about it for sake of the future education of the children in Furness.

The most frightening thing for me, as a teacher, is that very soon a parent of a Barrovian child will not have a secondary school to choose from that is controlled by an outside organisation. You will have the Academy (and its group of backers - with their agenda), the proposed trust School on Walney (The trust being almost exactly the same backers as the Academy), and St Bernard's (Controlled by the church). If you want a 'normal' state education - where do you go. Dowdales - which is already over subscribed, or UVHS. If I were a a parent now, I would like to be able to send my children (who are now grown up) to a school without any external influence, yet in Barrow we seem to be hell bent on doing away with that choice.
It is hard enough to remember my opinions, without also remembering my reasons for them!
