70s pre season tour of Scotland
Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
Very interesting summary. Each part of it all adding to the downfall. Who owned the club back then, this 3-4 season period in history has literally shaped the last 46 years. From what I can gather from post war, Div 4 North days, a short spell in Div 3 up to 1970, we were doing ok, nothing spectacular, a couple of high profile FA cup games, transfer fees featured, crowds in the 3-4000 mark, houses in town, then it just dropped and could not be recovered. Must have been very tough for the fans. I guess at the time football at the higher end was becoming more accessible to a nationwide audience, colour tv, football players staring to become household names stars, we must’ve lost a lot of fans to Utd, Liverpool around this time, not many would have wanted to see Barrow playing non league.

Does anyone know how much debt we were in when we lost our League status in 1972 ?

Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
We had no footballing debts (other clubs, etc.). There may have been other debtors, however.
Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
I may research this period in the evening mail archives as my visualisation of Barrow in the 60's is of a solid performing lower league outfit. Bit of a "who do you think you are" research. Who owned the club then? and were the warning signs there after dropping back out of third?

Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
I seem to recall having read on this site in the past that a strike in "the Yard" had a big knock on effect lowering attendances in late 60's early 70's.
Was the Chairman or President of the club at the time called Richardson ? and was boss at Vickers at the time. And was there another board member called Rose ? and if so did he go on to have something to do with Barrow Golf Club. If the Rose bloke is the same my one memory of him isn't I have to admit the warmest. I was a Junior Member at Barrow Golf club for a while in the 1970's and brought a friend to play who was a member at Dunnerholme. He paid the green fees etc and when we got to the 18th green this bloke started banging on the club house window in a rather aggressive manner gesturing for us to come inside and see him. We were only about 15 at the time and thought we'd done something wrong. Went in excepting a serious telling off for a breach of golfing conduct and all the bloke wanted to know was were we members and if not and had my friend paid his green fees.
That must have been 40 years ago strange how you remember certain things.

Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
I think the person in question could have been Dennis Rose. I believe he was instrumental in setting up The Croft, a home for the disabled and severely handicapped people. Did a lot of work fund raising as it is run on voluntary donations although now it could have some government help.
Richardson was Bill Richardson Chairman of Vickers. In those days I think the top people were more involved in the local scene. I know he was President or something of Barrow Sea and Marine Cadet Corps. Gave an illuminating speech once about how H.M.S. Invincible came about as the then Labour government didn't want any aircraft carriers built so they called it a through deck vessel and got it passed. Nice man.

There was a Glicksman who was a director - but perhaps that was an earlier era?

Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
it was definitely down to geography more then anything, and Hereford the darlings of the F.A. cup and national press that finally cost us our place in the football league. Took a second vote to kick us out. And Peter Swales a great friend (and chairman of Man City )of Barrow AFC, and Bill McCullough and Sammy Morgan could not influence his fellow chairman like he was able to on numerous occasions in past Re- elections. It was thanks to Peter Swales and the respect he had from football league chairman that we survived earlier votes.
Seasons to be cheerful.Part 16 3/4

Re: 70s pre season tour of Scotland
After crowd trouble at the FA Cup 1st round tie with Goole in 1977 (if I recall correctly) notices were posted around the ground with the threat explaining the consequences of any repeat of the trouble. I think that included shutting the ground.
