Accrington v Barrow 1960

If it was the September game, I believe the Barrow goal was scored by Barry Lowes. Looking back Barry Lowes was a very useful and interesting player in those days and one that has been increasingly forgotten over time. I found his obituary (attached) and it is quite revealing. It claims that Lowes was sold by Ron Staniforth to Blackpool for £7000 before ending up at Wukkie. My inflation calculator tells me that £7000 in 1962 would be worth approaching £125,000 in 2023.

Barry Lowes is of infamous memory for me. We had an FA Cup tie away at Wrexham (we played them in consecutive years in 1962 and 1963 in the cup). My recollection is that we were 2-0 down and fought back to 2-2 by half time (one goal was a Tommy Dixon stunner). The second half, I was behind the goal that Wrexham were attacking. It was an 'alamo' type of rearguard action and we survived until 10 or 15 minutes from time. Then Lowes got the ball almost on the half way line on the right and he decided to play it back all that way to our keeper (Yogi Caine perhaps?). A Wrexham player intercepted and that was the end of our cup hopes. My memory may be failing, but I can still picture it, like watching a car crash in slow motion!

but Ron Staniforth was our manager.

Fellow geek here. I zoomed in and I thought the player to the right of the Accrington header looked like Staniforth.

Yes, that was my first reaction even though, at this stage, I was a few short months from crossing the portal at Holker Street for the first time; what with me being a young whippersnapper.

Barry Lowes had departed Holker Street before I ever set foot in the ground. However, he returned in 1973 when we were in the NPL and he featured alongside his brother, John. Regrettably, Barry was clearly past his best at that late stage of his footballing career but he did roll back the years and show what he was capable of when he ran rings around Morecambe at Christie Park in our unforgettable 3-7 win there in late 1974.

Paul what about the penalty he took and it cleared the speedway track and sailed over the old Holker Street roof that took some doing !, saying that he coaced us at Ulverston Rangers and he was absolutely brilliant to watch and listen to !

I was at this game as a 13yr old. It was first away game I remember attending. IIRC Barry Lowes scored with a header in the 1st min from a cross by Mike Crowe.
