Super computer

Ok ok I know there is a long way to go but when things like this pop up I do have a read and sometimes it's worth sharing!!

So the supercomputer has predicted we will finish in 90pts however it's a fourth place finish..
But it's just nice to see us being thought of and looked at differently and seen as genuine contenders is something I never thought I would see.. for me, it put a smile on my face as it should all of you.

Interesting that.
We presently are averaging 1.81 points per game.
The supercomputer thinks we will average 2.16 points a game for our remaining 19 games.
Hope it's right.

I don’t often post but I am a main stand season ticket holder who is based in London and am also a teacher of Mathematics. And, for my sins, I am one of the two people who developed this ‘football super-computer’ (the other guy is a computing teacher who runs a football website - I can just about turn a computer on). For those who care, the individual results and resulting league table are worked out using previous home and away results to that point, goals scored and conceded at home and away to that point and a piece of mathematics called the Poisson distribution which predicts outcomes for events that happen at a defined rate (for example, if telephone calls arrive at a switchboard at a rate of 5 calls every minute, what is the probability of there being 7 calls in the next two minutes?)

It tends to get noticed whenever it predicts something people wouldn’t expect (for example, it went all over the papers when I think it was having Brentford to finish above Manchester United in the table).

Anyway, I’ve bored all my classes to tears today and now I’ve probably bored you all to tears as well - I sincerely hope that it is right, as well. Fingers crossed….

Well, if your a season ticket holder in the mains stand and you created this "supercomputer" you too should be as pleased as I and probably others are to see us being there or there abouts, especially if we did get 99pts!!

I don't think I've ever seen us, other than the mid or bottom in these predictions before!

Can you predict when I am likely to win russ raffle . I've been playing for years, never even won a ball or the famous iron!!!

Very interesting Artxanda. Not sure I understood it all, but I guess it presupposes that recent form will be roughly similar to future form - as we know, that doesn’t always happen! Let’s do it on the field and prove it right. Given the strength of teams around us, a fourth place finish would be very good. Our next two matches, against teams close to us, are really important. On another statistical note, we are 30 points above 23rd place with 19/20 games to go - probably OK to say we are safe from relegation!

Unfortunately for the Poisson distribution to be valid, the defined rate of something happening has to be greater than zero….

Good luck in the next raffle, anyway - maybe a case of “computer says ‘have a go’….”

But you are right - what a pleasure it has been watching this team put in the hard yards every single week, no matter what the outcome - knowing the game is happening the next day gets me through many a weary Friday afternoon.

And Bakewell Blue - yes, I think it would take a serious malfunction for the super-computer or reality to be considering relegation!
