Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
Foley decided that he wanted to give Barrett a debut given he may not get the opportunity to again and is 100% here next season, nothing more too it, stanway wasn’t injured as he did the full warmup and was there at the end

My two cents on the the academy thing.Scott5 wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 7:05 pm No disrespect to local players but was there really any benefit in an academy? Especially when we needed to build a team to try and compete in the league and find that. People talk about local talent but I’m yet to see anyone really tearing it up at any level other than perhaps Workington and Holker, and any decent player will go to the likes of Preston etc.
What we needed was the old B team or an equivalent to bring players through from lower leagues, and give fringe players a chance to play games and keep fit.
As for the match the spirit and effort was there for an hour and we should’ve been out of sight, the penalty miss was the turning point and it wasn’t a surprise - why not let Rose on it after Gordon’s miss against Cheltenham. Newport hit the bar and grew in confidence although standard Barrow the equaliser was a gift an abomination from
Macdonald who for his pedigree has been crap for me. Then we were all over the place and wide open and a Newport winner was inevitable as they grew in confidence and we wilted and tired. We aren’t fit enough, and are weak physically and mentally. Newby and Anderson (probably our worst player) coming on weakens us and we’re down to nine men pretty much then. The inevitable happens and Newport score.
If you don’t take your chances and can’t see games out then you won’t win many and that’s why we are where are and deservedly so. I hope the board and players watched those Newport celebrations at the end and watch it back…that has to be some
Kind of motivation.
As for Sam foleys comments if the players can’t handle the pressure and it got too much for them then they’re in the wrong job - a lot are. Anderson, Newby, Raglan, macdonald, Hemmings, Mahoney are not league 2 players and I don’t want any of them anywhere near a team in the national league either.
It could be done - take year groups from U6 to U10 and play them all under Barrow AFC, if each year group has 3, 4 teams or whatever, that's okay, each kid pays like , 100, 150, 200 per year, which pays for fees, refs, etc, local companies sponsor the kits and what not so the money the club gets in fees covers the team. These teams play in local leagues like all other teams but train and play at Holker Street, at that age, they do no damage to the pitch (at least for games).
Coaches can be anyone, parents, whatever, get put through a couple of coaching badges by the club so the coaching is of a good standard. It can maybe run as an arm of the club even, so doesn't have to 'cost' the club loads of money (funded through club fees and sponsorship from companies, fundraising, etc).
These kids can be ball boys and walk on kids at home games to give them exposure and make them excited about potentially being one of the players one day.
From U12 or so, they can start to pick up the best local players, concentrate on one team per year group and start to play in more regional / academy / development leagues, which would start to expose local kids to a higher standard of football and push standards.
Start with U6 to U10 and in 2 years you have a group of kids that have played together for a couple of years and in 6 years, you have kids who started at the club aged 6 and then start to play at a higher level than just local leagues. After 6 years, the 1 year olds will be 16 and have been playing at a better standard than Barrow and District JFL for 4 years and might be ready, alongside experienced players getting match practice or returning to fitness, to play in a better regional.league ir as a team in academy leagues till 18. Would be a steep learning curve for the pioneers and take likely 6-10 years to bear fruits but any academy plan or anything similar has to be a long term commitment and 'investment' but wpukd be a way, in the middle term, to build a club and a pathway within the club that can be more attainable for young local talent. Happens all over Europe, from top level teams to local teams. The approach to get to a sustainable model that includes local talent (and there is local talent, it is just difficult to get exposure to a higher level of football than local leagues without moving to a bigger club and at a certain age, it's too late) has to be a holistic one that takes the club in its current guise (full of mercenaries that live and train miles away) to be a real community club that is made up, from a very young age, partly / mostly / completely? of local players. Any of these kids make it, they help the club, in best case were free and can be sold on and worst case, got a good football education at the club and support the club as adults and the club has really given something back to thr community.
Probably never happen due to resources, finances and lack of vision but it works elsewhere in Europe at different levels so it can work and it would be so awesome for the club.

Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
As per another post. When Barrow were going to have a youth team they actually signed 7 players. 2 of them, their dads were the u16 coaches. 1 of them cant even get in Holker reserves. It doesnt work!! I played for preston centre of excelence, Not 1 coach was someones dad etc, all from out of town. The u16 coach was also the full time youth team coach. We dont have the money or the structure to make it work. How many local players actually play at a decent level atm? And by that i mean national league north and above? Why do u think, bar the class of 92, teams make a massive deal when they get 1 local lad in the 1st team? Coz it doesnt happen that often, atm its not worth the money or timevskohz wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 10:21 pmMy two cents on the the academy thing.Scott5 wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 7:05 pm No disrespect to local players but was there really any benefit in an academy? Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
You don’t even need to go down the full academy route
Workington have youth teams from U23 - U16
4 of their youth teams have won their respective leagues this season
Kendal Town have youth teams right down the ages - they also have a woman’s side and starting a pathway to that too
It doesn’t need to be a fully progressive academy - but it can be done to have a pathway from first team down

Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
Its been a shambles hasn't it? Never known a team represent a working class town as badly as this one. Complete lack of efforts and constant passing of the book. Didn't hang around long enough at full time to see who said what to who but a blank page needed asap. Mccann for me is the only one id keep but contracts will say thats not the case.
Its the none league esque shambles off the pitch thats done us...
Can't even get the correct half time raffle ticket announced. The new pies are awful because we allegedly never paid the last lots bills, allegedly never paid stewards earlier this season. Do we deserve a league club? I'd suggest as much as I wish it wasnt the case that we've found our natural level.
Sooner next season starts the better. Get your season tickets bought and funnel your money in the club shop because God knows We'll need it. Whoever lines up next year hopefully its 11 lads fit to wear the shirt.
Happy year 125

Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
Lost to a shite team who were slightly better than us, fair pay play to them they fought for lives in 2nd half and stayed up. Hate them all (apart from the new keeper today, he can't be blamed)
Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
Teams uve mentioned are part time semi pro teams Adam. Think about it, Barrow have an u23, one player is decent, but works a full time job in Barrow. Hows he going to train with the full time 1st team? Who train in Manchester? Quit his job? Doesnt workAdam29 wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 11:21 pm You don’t even need to go down the full academy route

I rarely post, but I thought this deserved a reply. With respect to local talent, there isn't anything in the water that makes youngsters in the wider Barrow area worse footballers than anywhere else, what is missing is a structure to bring on that talent. Yes, some of the better players may be poached by bigger clubs, but some will be missed and eventually make it to the first team. To give one example Branthwaite came through the youth teams at Carlisle and eventually played for the first team at Carlisle, before he was sold to Everton. Should he move on for a fee, Carlisle will receive a windfall, likely in the millions on sell-on fees.

88 minutes “correction we got it wrong the actual winning ticket is….”
