Agree with all of that. Not only did he have an eye for goal, but was great at holding the ball up and his subsequent skillful distribution also contributed a lot of goals. He was a key man in our promotion season and the following one when we finished in our highest ever FL postion of 8th in the old 3rd div (now lge 1 for our younger listeners) Sadly having reached the 'old' age of 30 in 1968, he was considered to have lost his pace and seemed a bit lightweight by some of our 'knowledgeable' popular siders. He struggled for his place in the 68/69 season under Colin Appleton and was subsequently sold to Stockport on the cheap for £6000. It could be argued that the sale of Jimmy (he was never adequately replaced) plus the retirement of the best keeper to have ever graced Holker St (Fred Else) the season after and the decimation of the team by new manager Norman Bodell, began the slow decline back towards the 4th div and to be followed by two successive re-election campaigns, the second being disastrous after finishing 3rd bottom. Stockport played a part there too, finishing 5 points below us but getting re-elected along with Crewe (bottom) and Northampton 4th bottom.
