Soothes the blow from missing that Lancs Cup game, knowing he didn't play

One game he did play in, and one which I attended, was at Bloomfield Road in the early 1970s. The game finished 0-0 and United sent Blackpool crashing down into the old Div 2. Although it finished 0-0 Charlton scored the best goal I've ever seen - ever. Obviously disallowed, for what reason I've never known.

He received the ball inside his own half, just outside the centre circle, lifted the ball up with his instep then cracked a volley straight into the net! It must have been at least 40 yards out. Never have I seen a ball hit so hard! Saw him a play a few times but that goal has always stood in my mind.

If it had been allowed and the TV cameras had been there, I've no doubt it would have been judged to have been the Goal of the Century.

I didn't realise that the Lancashire Cup still existed but it wasn't always a "training ground" fixture. In fact I have a boyhood memory of Barrow reaching the final and losing to Burnley at (if memory serves me right) a packed Holker Street. Albert Cheeseborough got the only goal for Burnley. It must have been in the early 50s maybe 51, because I left the town in January 1953 and did not come back to live here until 2005.

There appear to be very few publicly accessible vantage points, but assuming they play it on the pitch nearest the new facilities, a trek through the trees on Grove Lane might be the best bet, but you are still a good disance from the action.
