We played 3 at the back last season and had the best defensive record in the league, I think. The difference being we had a midfield with a couple of quick, non-stop runners in White and Hardcastle and a guy in Rooney who controlled the pace of the game and made sure we kept the ball. The back 3 was protected and the strikers were supplied. This season we have a midfield where we have 2 players in Jason Taylor and Mike Jones who seldom pass the ball anywhere but sideways or backwards and are slow ageing players plus a generally non-existant third midfielder since Hardcastle was injured. Jason Taylor has played well until tonight but he looked shattered almost from the start tonight.blue nige wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:06 pm we need to go to a flat back four this 5 at the back has been a disaster we have too many defenders leaving it for each other and unsure of who's doing what the goals we are conceding are unbelievable we press the game at all the wrong times , just what are they being coached ? people on here saying can we afford to sack Dunn well there's a million reasons to do it if we go down it will be a disaster and surely now even the most diehard fan ,(and I'm one of them) must be worried, something has to happen before its too late !

Re: Barrow v Oldham match thread
yes nice to watch at times but we're not winning and they way we concede goals is shocking yet Dunn still plays the same system it's as though he's thinking oh well it'll work out in the end ! we're in big trouble people needvto wake up!Cromwell58 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:23 pm Not time to man the lifeboats yet, we not yet seen an iceberg, get a grip I agree it was not a great display but we have proven we can play football
still early days and still time to pull things together, if we are still in this position in January then I might put a lifebelt on.

Josh Kay (the attacking midfielder - according to our manager) playing at left wing back in LG2 has played 9, scored 2 and assisted 3 goals, as well as winning a penalty that led to a goal.Il Metronomo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:20 pmBarry is a quality wing-back. Brown isn't a wing-back.
Unless bookings equal inconsistency (admittedly, he’s too hotheaded and/or a little too keen/passionate) I’m pretty lost with your comments.

Too many doom merchants. As has been said there is probably no money in the kitty to pay Dunn off so we have to stick with him and let them sort it out. There will be more twists and turns yet. Not our best performance by a long way tonight and Zouma was disappointing but I would never abandon ship.

Genuinely interested who people want Dunn to be replaced with, and where the money will come from to pay out a year and a half wages for the management team?

I'm confident if Dunn reverts to a back four we'll be more solid but play with a player sat just in front then have 2 more mobile players in front this will make a better shape can't believe he hasn't tried this !

Agree with what you're saying. To look at it differently, as he's a big attacking threat is it time to move him into the midfield? Possibly in place of Biggins or even as an out and out wide midfielder/winger?janwilder wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:30 pmJosh Kay (the attacking midfielder - according to our manager) playing at right wing back in LG2 has played 9, scored 2 and assisted 3 goals, as well as winning a penalty that let to a goal.Il Metronomo wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:20 pm

As for the calls for sacking Dunn. Where's the money coming from?
As I've said in other places. I think we have the ingredients. It's getting the mixture right. At the minute the back 3 (5?) Is leaking goals. I don't profess to know the answer but I'd say it might time to tweak the system a bit to try and stem the flow of goals.
We hate Carlisle United, we hate Workington too (and Morecambe), we hate Accrington Stanley but Barrow we love you

My opinion is based on watching all of his performances and judging them.janwilder wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:30 pmJosh Kay (the attacking midfielder - according to our manager) playing at right wing back in LG2 has played 9, scored 2 and assisted 3 goals, as well as winning a penalty that let to a goal.

Two goals and three assists in nine games is a good record - as I said he offers a lot going forward. But he's had some poor games, Bolton being one of them.
I'm not getting at him. He should have started tonight.
EDIT: Also he's been playing left wing-back, not right wing-back. Do you watch the games or just look at stats? Might explain why you were lost by my comments.

I think the point is that if you appoint an unproven manager with a very poor record from his fledgling managerial career to date then you leave yourself open to criticism when things aren’t working out. It was a very bold decision to appoint Dunn to a club new to the EFL after 48 years away!JammyBluebird wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:33 pm Genuinely interested who people want Dunn to be replaced with, and where the money will come from to pay out a year and a half wages for the management team?

Re: Barrow v Oldham match thread
The team has showed flashes of brilliance in previous games. It is still the defence that needs tightening up.We are scoring goals but getting caught out by set pieces. Also when a decent cross comes in we need someone to get on the end of it.When crosses came in tonight they left it too late to run on to them. That,s something that needs addressing. No leaders tonight.
Re: Barrow v Oldham match thread
When’s James Jones due back ? Id have him next to Platt we also miss Hardcastles running in midfield
Re: Barrow v Oldham match thread
He looked comfortable in possession tonight and was looking to get on the ball at every opportunity, especially when he moved into the middle tonight.Barra Marra wrote: ↑Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:36 pmAgree with what you're saying. I liked him in a front 3 last season when we went 4-3-3. It removed the defensive responsibilities for him, where he struggles a little. Cracking out ball to have too. That’s said, we don’t seem to look to hit that ‘big switch’ ball across the field anymore into space. We seem somewhat lackadaisical in moving the ball. Kay needs it into space and we almost always seem to play it to him with a 5 yard sidewards pass with the opponents having 2 banks of 4 back (on the edge of the 18 yard box). Play is literally dead upon arrival
