We lost 4-0 AWAY to Watford in 68-69. The home game was a 4-1 defeat, and we were played off the park. They had a winger called Stuart Scullion who ran rings round our defence on a muddy surface. The only 4-0 home defeat to Watford was in 1959. https://www.11v11.com/teams/watford/tab ... on/Barrow/

Going off topic, but if I recall correctly, the TV cameras were there for that one, doing one of their customary "life at lowly Barrow" documentaries, so it played well to their theme!xerxes wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 9:22 am The only 4-0 home defeat to Watford was in 1959. https://www.11v11.com/teams/watford/tab ... on/Barrow/

Agree totally with this postJim wrote: ↑Sun Nov 15, 2020 12:04 pmI am glad someone has mentioned this. There was an earlier post about "another Hird howler". Possibly, he had other better options than a pass back, but Dixon still had time to deal with it. Unfortunately, his first touch wasn't good, then he slipped as he tried to kick it. These things happen, neither player deserves to be castigated for an error.
Ps - although I would add that I am not a great fan of passing back to the keeper. I think we do it too often. It almost always results in a boot upfield, which is contrary to the principles of 'passing football' and often leads to us giving the ball to the opposition.

Could you be confusing that with the Sportsview item on our last match v Millwall played on 6th February 1965?Jim wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:07 amGoing off topic, but if I recall correctly, the TV cameras were there for that one, doing one of their customary "life at lowly Barrow" documentaries, so it played well to their theme!xerxes wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 9:22 am The only 4-0 home defeat to Watford was in 1959. https://www.11v11.com/teams/watford/tab ... on/Barrow/

I do not remember a lot about the game itself apart from the score. However, the resultant 'Rookery End' graffiti on Holker Street has always stuck in my mind as has the Watford fan (big bloke) in a pink shirt who was so gassed, he collapsed with a bang on Ainslie Street whilst making his way to the game and took a long while to get up again. Whilst being used to seeing blokes falling over 'under the influence' - I was brought up in Barrow for goodness sake - seeing one do so whilst wearing a pink shirt was a new experience for me.xerxes wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 9:22 amWe lost 4-0 AWAY to Watford in 68-69. As for passing back, the boot upfield from the keeper was the traditional way for the keeper to deal with a back pass (and inevitably return the ball to the opposition).
Under Messrs Evatt and Dunn, Barrow have usually been able to play shorter, more constructive passes, not always to the approval of the popular side.
If anyone with a pen and paper who is bored would like to watch, say, the last four matches they could produce a tally chart of how many times a pass from young Joel is still with Barrow after the second ball.

As someone who purchased - and proudly wore - a pink Ben Sherman from Impact4 it's fortunate we never bumped into each other outside the Derby or the Bay Horse, then.Cubbins Paratrooper wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:53 am Whilst being used to seeing blokes falling over 'under the influence' - I was brought up in Barrow for goodness sake - seeing one do so whilst wearing a pink shirt was a new experience for me.

I think it is fair to add that by 1970, I had seen a few more and even had my own pink 'Benny'. You know how it is, MP, certain things stick in your mind.MisterPleasant wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:25 amAs someone who purchased - and proudly wore - a pink Ben Sherman from Impact4 it's fortunate we never bumped into each other outside the Derby or the Bay Horse, then.Cubbins Paratrooper wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 10:53 am Whilst being used to seeing blokes falling over 'under the influence' - I was brought up in Barrow for goodness sake - seeing one do so whilst wearing a pink shirt was a new experience for me.![]()

Re: Cambridge v Barrow match thread
I think it is fair to say that mistakes do happen, my only issue is with the situation play. On a wet and slippery pitch we should be playing to the conditions. You could see as soon as Hird got the ball the correct play was down the line, yes it may have given possession away but on the half way line and we are well drilled enough across the pitch to either get the ball back quickly or easily nullify any quick attack from Cambridge.
I like how we play around and calmly keep possession but if the opposition is pushing up, and given the pitch conditions, the smart play is to get rid or play a chip up field to hopefully get a striker to keep possession, the dumb play is exactly what was played.
Having watched a few games this season I think we are well placed to move up the league. Injuries, etc. have hit us hard, any team would struggle without their best players on the pitch and Kay, Quigley & Hardcastle are integral to how we play, never mind having to play most games with one or all of these players in a higher league.

By the way that Watford side who beat us 4-1 at HS in December 1968 also featured Mike Walker (ex Spurs manager) in goal; our own Keith Eddy; Watford legend Dixie Hale and playing up front that day alongside Scullion, a guy by the name of Barry Endean (not Brian as per the programme). Endean was a prolific scorer between 68 and 71 including scoring the winner that knocked out Liverpool in the FA Cup 6th round in 70. They were playing a league below their real level that season. By far the best side in that league, probably bar Swindon who of course that season actually won the League Cup.
