Typical away fan view by the sounds. Taking that view as literally what you see out the window...
It really is a shame that the local council, who desperately try to promote tourism in the town, also opted to divert all incoming traffic down the industrial road coming into the town many many years ago. The Dalton bypass among other changes resulted in a road on which you got into the town much faster, which is what the businesses wanted and it was needed. Sadly it drives any visitors past the factories and industrial units, the slag heap left over from the old steal works industry and a rather grey looking council estate and the municipal waste disposal site. Sadly you reach the ground just after all this before you reach the town proper. Doubt many have gone much beyond that and have had their view thus tainted.
Originally you had to drive through Dalton, which sits between Ulverston and Barrow, then choose the industrial road described above or the wide tree lined avenue of Abbey Road. With it's stone arch leading to Furness Abbey itself next to a 5 star hotel and lots of large houses with large gardens. It goes like that almost all the way into the town. Takes you past The Strawberry which is good if your looking for food. If your coming by train Abbey Road crosses the end of Holker St on which the ground sits, station approach exits onto Holker St near Abbey Road. The coast road from Ulverston (A5087) is another alternate route and is just as nice, in a different way. You skirt along the edge of Morecambe Bay, but that brings you in on the wrong side of town for the ground and takes longer.
Like any locale, it has it's detractors that have either never been there, only briefly been there or have no idea where the good spots are because they are not familiar enough with it. Depends on what your looking for. Being an area of high unemployment you often find a lot here want to be elsewhere, so locals don't always praise the area either.
