George Smith is still about I think he was our record transfer to Portsmouth 1967

George is over in the north east. £13,000 I think it was Portsmouth paid. I've got a letter from him somewhere in my chaotic 'filing system' that he sent as we were due to play 'Boro in the Cup those few years ago.

He is a north east lad. He came to Barrow from Newcastle went to Portsmouth and then left Portsmouth to join Middlesborough. Best player I ever saw play for Barrow although we had players who had been better but were past their prime when they joined Barrow.

He was last heard of on coaching staff at Hartlepool. Does anyone have a contact there? I believe the Chief Exec, Mark Maguire, recently left the club.

He did some scouting for Stoke City and there's something about a football academy he established in the north east but I'm struggling to find more info.

George Smith oozed class, what a player. I remember being stunned as a youth when Pompey came in for him and paid all that money. He used to board with an elderly lady on West View Road.

Not confirmed yet so it could change but I’ve been told the talked about plan is
Home Team is on AM
Away Team is on FM
But that is not a confirmed plan

And obviously online via subscription on the club website (be it iFollow or Clubs own whichever way they go)

Seems a very over-complicated plan to me Just put Carlisle on the North Cumbria AM and FM frequencies Barrow on the South Cumbria AM and FM frequencies with the Wukkie or Kendal game online and the remaining AM frequencies.

The big argument will be over the game featured on Freeview but i.d imagine the one that isn't would be put on DAB but i can see major kick offs if they take CUFC off there as there will be a lot of people across the North of England/South of Scotland who will have got used to it being available there. The Carlisle take-up will not improve on i.player until either they have a very successful season [some hope there ] Relace their in house media team and/or improve the service they offer [ multi-cameras and dedicated commentary that isn't miles out of sync ]


My opinion is if I was Barrow I wouldn't push for it to be featured that much that way they can build up a following whether it be at the gate or on whatever online subscription platform they chose to go with and on that subject I would advise that when they do a deal with someone to cover the games they spend a few quid more and do it properly with an at least 3 camera positions and that as some clubs do and stay live at half time.

Radio Cumbria can’t split their frequencies like that

Just to put my mind at ease here, 'cos I'm a simple soul, there will be a way of listening to commentary by subscribing to some sort of broadcast (if not BBC RC), is that correct? This iFollow television thing is only available outside the UK, isn't it?

If barrow goes with iFollow or goes with their own system you’ll be able to listen to to the games through either of those.

Carlisle use the BBCRC feed through theirs so I would imagine that Barrow would request similar which ever way they go
