Back in the 60s, we used to play first division clubs whose squad contained a sprinkiling of well-known names, so the game would spark a bit of interest and would be seen as bit of a challenge. Now, Burnley field their Under 21s and we field squad players and it has no appeal whatsoever.

Time to rethink this competition, which I believe we are obliged to enter. Scrap it altogether would be my first option.

I suppose that was my point Jim. Like you I am of a generation that can remember when this competition had some value. We play it now because of the affiliation of the county associations with the FA. We play it because we have to.

But I agree people still paid their eight quid or whatever to see it and that is also a bit sad. I can’t really blame PW. He did make it clear about the likely team before the game. His priority is Harrogate and that is probably correct. Have to say though that playing triallists in a cup final really is giving the event the finger.

As we build a reserve squad based on youth the habit of throwing in a few first teamers to improve the squad in these games will diminish even further. They usually play these fixtures these days at lunchtime. Clearly that’s for a reason

Agreed, we used to get over 7,000 at Holker Street for some of the games. The only benefit now is that it gives the squad players some match practice.

Don’t agree with scrapping it as I think the club played it well last season by opening the game up free of charge to local schools. Lots of these kids might not get the chance to get to HS but may have enjoyed it and gone back with a parent to another game.

The competition won’t be scrapped. It’s as much to do with the structure and politics of the FA as it is football. If it was going to be scrapped it would have already.

Alot of older supporters remember when we played in this competition and some of first division players played in it Gowling Jimmy Rimmer ,Willie. Morgan ,Martin Dobson etc.

Now it's a game for U21 teams.
Seemed like Burnley were the better team.More worrying was the number of penalty misses

We didn’t win it so it should be scrapped is the cry by some. If we won it then it should be here for eternity would also be ringing out. It is what it is derived from a bygone era. The LFA have let it become watered down over the years probably by peer pressure from the FA and it Ideally suits us now we have a B team.

Niot the case Mark. It is because it is apprently seen as a nuisance to many clubs, needs to be fitted in, isn't of much interest to lancashire FA either judging by it being played now, rather thanat the end of previous season, played on some training ground at a neutral venue.... etc.

Each County association has its own County Cup. So Stockport County will play in the Cheshire County cup. Ipswich Town Play in the Suffolk County Cup. Norwich City will play in the Norfolk County Cup.

Essentially each County association will have elected representatives on various FA Boards and Committees. The rules of our game and indeed the entire governance process below EFL level is still controlled by people of local significance who may never have actually attended a game never mind played it. It should be remembered that the FA is essentially a Government quango. I would guess that the head of the FA will report to the Department For Culture, Media and Sport. Other than its responsibility to look after the National Squads its historic role has been to ensure that publicly supported funding reaches the grass roots.

County associations through their involvement in the FA governance have always wielded a great deal of influence in some areas and the County cup system is one of these areas. Simply put failure to play in the County cup would prevent us playing in the FA Cup and incur a fine. Its an anachronism but you'd completely have to change the structure of the FA to change it.

Good point about moaning because we lost. We probably wouldn't be talking quite like this if we'd won. In truth if we really wanted to show how useless this competition is, we'd have to do something as supporters that simply does not come as natural. If that game last night had been attended by less than 50 paying customers it would have embarrassed the governing body. However the early rounds seem to actively discourage attendance. And still the competition persists. Win or lose it is an irrelevance. But as I said in a previous post, for those of us than can remember a previous era it is a bit sad to have to say that.

As Mark said earlier, It’s suits us that bit more now we have a B team & we could actually benefit from it by keeping the B team busy with these extra fixtures

Now, here's a thing. Yorkshire doesn't appear to have a cup but each Riding has its own county cup - West Riding County cup etc. No sign of Leeds or Bradford City (Bradford PA are) in that competition BUT Barnoldswick - a town in Lancashire - is! I haven't gone into the North and East Ridings and I can't find any competitors for the South Riding cup :D

I’m also of an age where I remember them days. Football has changed though and some people need to realise rather than living in the past.
On the subject of u21 teams, we’ve been lucky that we had man United and Everton youth visit last season and Newcastle come this season. There’s more positives to be taken than negatives from the u21 teams playing in competitions and even the friendly. All brings cash in or like the Everton game gets kids who might never attend a game actually go to HS.

I think all the players who missed a pen should be lined up in the goal and Farman should be allowed to hoof balls at them as a punishment.

There is even a Leicestershire and Rutland County Cup. A little known fact is that Barrow Rising Star won it in 1903. ;)
