He was with us from 1977/78 to 79/80, making 48 league appearances plus 2 as substitute, scoring 7 goals. Not sure what happened to him then, but he was back in 1982/83 and the next season (54 league appearances, 36 goals) before following Vic Halom to Rochdale.

Remember him at Runcorn/Winsford (not sure which). Neil Morton was sent off for throwing the ball away after conceding a dubious free kick. AG walked accross to the young lad involved and said ' You and me the next time you get the ball,OK' The lad went into hiding for the rest of the game. They were a classic pairing.
One of my favourite ever Barrow players. Wonder what he's doing now?

Along with Frankie Gamble, if memory serves. While we were left to suffer the carnage laid in front of us by Brian (huge swear filter thing) Kidd.

I always thought Tarrant was rubbish, but then that game against Nuneaton. Best Barrow match I've been to. Well best 15mins anyway. Not sure what that game meant, was it the last qual round in the FA Cup?

Always had a soft spot for Marc Coates and to a certain extent Lee Cooper, although I'll never fully forgive him for breaking our hearts against Dover.

Nicky Pev Number 1 for me though. I remember a home game, we had a corner at the Holker St End. He always used to just stand against the back post and get so many tap ins. A lad in the crowd shouted to him "Pev, I have you at 3-1 to be first scorer. There's a tenner in it for ya" Corner comes in, Pev taps one in at the back stick. Pev and fan hug and i'm pretty sure he slipped him the tenner there and then. Pev was class. He did two things very well. 1. Con refs into giving soft free kicks typically by collapsing on the ground and holding his head after a challenge for a centre back and 2. Just scored goals. Van Nistelrooy of Non League. Shitty tap ins all the time. class.

In a post above, Cokey mentions James Bell who scored 78 goals for us in 146 games between 1911 and 1917. This was when we were in the Lancashire Combination Division 1, before joining the FL in 1921.

Here he is, James “Daisy” Bell, who was scoring all our goals for us at Holker Street exactly 100 years ago. This is the Andy Cook of a century ago. Strangely, they’re not completely unalike, with the short dark hair and the menacing, piercing eyes. By the same token, will somebody come on this forum in 100 years time and write about some bloke called Andy Cook who, long long ago, scored Barrow's goals?

HE'S FAT, HE'S ROUND, HE'S WORTH A MILLION POUND, COWPERTHWAITE, COWPERTHWAITE. No1 for me but over the years we've had some good un's. Morton, Brady especially. Can't comment on league days, only started going to Holker St in 1975.

First spell he was a pretty average midfielder, with a hard tackle. When he came back and Hallom put him up front he was a revelation, along with Frannie Gamble, who I used to give lifts to games when I lived in Liverpool. Them were't days...

Surprised Rob Thomas hasn't had a mention. Must have scored 40-50, Shirley?

A quick look at "The Definitive..." suggests 43 in the league and in cup competitions in 1977-8 and 1978-9 seasons, Frank.

A great list by pjdaly.
My first ever game at Holker St was against Plymouth, I think, late 60's, when a low hard cross hit the ref on the backside and went in. No one near him. Not sure who claimed that goal.
Been hooked ever since.

It was a George McLean shot at the Steelworks end of the ground that hit the referee Ivan Robinson deflecting it past ex Manchester United goalkeeper Pat Dunne.

Not so many, but he terrified plenty of opposing midfielders...... ;)
