There will always be much bigger clubs relegated to the NL who will spend spend spend to try & get back as quickly as possible.

Especially this season as the next one every club in the National league gets capped, so it’s a scramble to get out, Hence a fair few splashing the cash mainly Wrexham & Stockport as fair as I see but Chesterfield, Swindon & Notts Co receive an honourable mention.

Stockport started spending big the season before & ramped it up more this, Hence we lost both Rooney & Quiggs as they both doubled their wages, Nothibg to do with Traveling or mental health, More Turkish Teeth .

So - here’s the conundrum. If we were able to find and sign a “number 9” then based on both history and the perception of contributions to this thread then we’d probably lose him rapido to the very forces that took Quigley.

So why desperately seek to find something that everyone wants and that some can afford to steal from you at any given time?

Pick him up as a free agent, which is all we can do now, and make a bit of cash. There's always an upside. :)

Absolutely MP that’s all you can do. The thread seems to assume that this “number 9” would be some sort of talisman that would transform the side. A ready made talisman is such an unlikely scenario. They would need to be developed before they became the real deal because if they were the real deal they’d probably be somewhere else. When they do become the real deal they move on. Zanzala will go the same way if he continues to develop and we will be left having to be content with a large cheque.

This thread is predicated on the basis that this number 9 is some form of missing link that can be acquired in its finished form. Essentially confusing the Quigley that departed with the one that arrived on a three year contract to some shock and derision. Quigley was a great asset and good business. Wishing for another Quigley is meaningless. Wishing for a developed Gotts or Stevens is more relevant and frankly more exciting.

I am quite happy with the current forward options with Zanzala, Sea and Gordon. However, if Sea and Zanzala were ever unavailable at the same time, we would be toothless. Should we recruit another powerful, bustling type of striker (assuming of course that one was available)? We need cover, but if we get someone, he or one of the aforementioned trio is going to have to sit out. I think it would probably have to be a young, raw, powerful type who is capable of roughing up the opposition defence (so to speak) but not the finished article. IMO, that suggests a loan signing.

Which is exactly why I like the type of signings such as Gotts and Stevens because they are young, quick and have the potential to improve. Sadly, we will always be in the bottom few clubs in terms of attendances and will have to sell our best players to survive. This makes it absolutely essential that any Barrow manager has the ability to judge young players with potential for great improvement. It's not easy and there will be plenty like Gribbin with potential but don't progress.

Well therein may lie the difference between a time served manager such as Cooper and one like Dunn who tends to work exclusively with youth. Gribben was a fading starlet when we signed him. Dunn saw the inherent skills in Gribben but had no grid of experience when it came to assessing whether Gribben could hack it week in week out in L2. Gotts may be same age but has a very different profile. His signing in my eyes is the most impressive thing Cooper has so far achieved.

I watched the highlights of the Oldham game on Quest recently and the studio presenters commented on Zanzala stating that he is an upcoming prospect who failed to deliver at Carlisle. They elaborated stating that Mark Cooper seems to be bringing the best out of him.

Reminds me of when Evett brought Scott Quigley here. Quigley had failed to impress at other clubs but with the help of Evett he managed to reach his full potential. I think we've acquired a manager, with Mark Cooper, who has a similar vision to Evett. Let's hope we can hang on to both Zanzala and Cooper.

Zanzala is a much better striker than Quigley in my opinion, Raheem Sterling would have been proud of his goal against Oldham last week. Although Quigs was no slouch at National League level of course.

For Mickmike re Turkish Teeth; can I ask Mickmike do people from the USA go to Turkey for dental work? My mate’s a joiner in the yard and made me a set out of teak years ago and they are still going strong. You don’t get craftsmanship like that anymore.

Massively off topic, but this comment reminded me that in the early 1900s the North East Railway Company workshops in Darlington had a small section that made artificial limbs for railwaymen that had got inured at work. They went on to make prosthetics for soldiers injured in WW1. Don't think they ever did dentures though!
