Barrow vs Derby Match Thread

The pre draw puts a home or away next to 6 European teams. Then one them is drawn from pot 1, example Man City (they have been drawn to be away) then whoever is picked from pot2 is given the home tie versus them. My understanding of it is that if we get a champions league team it will be 24th/25th and then anyone else it will be the week before

Really hope we get the Man United or Liverpool away draw that the board deserves.

As fever mounts over our progress in this particular competition – and who we might draw next – my mind goes back to when we met Nottingham Forest in this same competition back on 4th September 1969. We lost 1-2 to a last minute goal at the Holker Street end by Ian Storey-Moore (double-barrelled surnames were almost unheard of back then but how things have changed . . . )

In the next round Forest were drawn at home to West Ham. Given that top teams tended to put out their strongest sides back in those days we have to rue the possibility that we narrowly missed out on entertaining The Hammers at Holker Street, and their 1966 World Cup trio of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. The online records show that Forest beat West Ham 1-0 on 23rd September 1969 and yes, the famous trio did all play. That would have been something if it had been against us at Holker Street . . . . .

Yes, we did. Seem to recall it was played on August Bank Holiday Monday. A lively night at Holker Street.

Was at that game we were very unlucky.
I like Jimmy Mulvaney.
When he scored would just walk back to the centre spot.
Thought he scored more goals than he actually did.

It was in August 1971 and we lost 0-2 - our last EFL Cup match before losing our League status. It was a midweek match - in those days August Bank Holidays had a full League programme (in which we lost 4-0 at Brentford).

Mulvaney (and Chapman as well I presume) got quite a long ban for that. Something like 6 weeks IIRC.

If I remember correctly Mulvaney got eight weeks which was reduced to six on appeal.

Knocked out by Birmingham in a replay - Birmingham went on to win the whole competition that season
