Club to go to cashless payments

Just another example of an organisation using Covid as an excuse to get rid of cash for their own convenience . Another form of consumer bullying- if I want to use a card it will be my choice and I for one won’t be using a card to just to suit Hornby and co

I think some of us are over reacting to this, cashless is becoming standard across the EFL and indeed in society at large, the overwhelming majority of people have debit cards with contactless function - how hard is is really to tap a card on a card reader ? My 98 year old grandfather has a debit card and uses it so I don’t know what the fuss is all about, it might not be a persons personal preference but it’s not difficult
Even children these days have them too, They’re are many options such as Go Henry available if you look. I find it much easier just to transfer them money than hall my ass to the ATM each time they ask for a tenner - and you can track their spending better.

I suspect the club would be fully aware of the reaction of some of the fans but their’s clearly advantage to doing it this way or else they wouldn’t be doing it - and neither would the other clubs. I has come somewhat out of that blue though, perhaps it’s announcement could have been managed better.

If you look at the amount of posts arguing against this then it’s fairly obvious its not gone down very well. If this is to become the way the club want to operate then it needed to be phased in over the coming season, not with a few weeks to go before the season starts.

As someone said, the club should be looking at ways of taking money, not making it harder to spend it within the ground.

And the Barrow eats idea is terrible.

Poor decision to go cashless. This will impact the most disadvantaged in society who for whatever reason don’t have a card. Not progress is it !

Cashing in on the most needy by making profit off a pre paid card and Barrow eats won’t be doing it for the publicity. Bit like paying for a season ticket in interest free installments then being charged £30+ for the arrangement fee, taking fans for mugs.

Nonsense, of course there are people old and young who use cards etc but there are lots that don't. This only puts up barriers that will stop people coming.
Accept contactless everywhere yes, great, but refusing other "inconvenient" payments is ludicrous.

You are right, they are taking away a legitimate payment method, but as a club we are following trends in the country at large, I know retail stores will stop accepting cash in the coming years by way of not replacing cash enabled cash registers when they are life expired as they won’t be viable to replace.

Colchester Utd are entering their third season as cashless, they too provided an alternative payment card by means of machines at the ground to load the money onto the cards, by the end of the first season they were so little used barely 1% of takings used the club provided card that they are now looking to remove them as soon as possible, and they have lost money in installing and implementing the system and that’s probably why Barrow are not going down a similar route.

As for the £50 minimum amount, it may seem steep and it would be a barrier to some albeit a very small actual number, but I would easily wax £50 at a game especially if I had a few pints or took my kids. Left over money can be used at other games if not spent and frankly if you can’t afford £50 in one go then you can’t really afford to go the football at all.
Sounds harsh bits it’s true.

Absolutely Nige. I’m the same as you and we have jobs that pay fairly well but to say if someone can’t afford to put £50 on a kids card then they can’t afford to go to the football us just plain daft, and insulting to probably quite a few people reading that. I know several people who wouldn’t be able to afford that but can still attend the games.

This decision is discriminatory. It discriminates against people that for whatever reason cannot or will only use cash. While cash is still legal tender it should be excepted everywhere, otherwise you are locking people out. It becomes a barrier. I believe this will effect attendancies and it will effect the income take in the ground.

The lack of consultaion on this is breathtaking. Why didn't they do a fans survey like the ifollow one to gauge peoples views.

Whether people can or can't afford £50 is also only part of the issue. What responsible parent can honestly say that they would be happy to send their child out of the house with £50 and no control over how it is spent?

First of all the sheer timing of this is very damaging and potentially costly, at least provide some sort of warning/phased introduction to allow customers to adapt.

Are the club seriously inviting parents to send their younger kids to the football alone to walk around with a minimum of £50 on them?. Absolute genius.
