Barrow v Newport County match thread
Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
You only have to go back through the match threads to see the warning signs as far back as September. Cant score, cant defend, cant create, a recipe for only going one way. Bringing in Gallagher and the infamous “we don't need to do much” January transfer window sealed our fate.
Total rebuild required and a rethink off the pitch that includes a pathway Academy or a youth development programme is an absolute must.

Craig Rutherford in today’s post match show made some interesting and alarming points regarding the club and the Academy. Everything was in place he said the EFL said all boxes ticked, players, schooling, accommodation all sorted and the club pulled it. He said that’s as much as wanted to say on the matter

This match typical of our season get chances score a goal ( unusual) then miss a penalty to let them back in it.Then a howler in defence by I think Williams to let them in to score has he got Welsh descendants any chance? Then go to pieces.Loads of shots blocked or off target . Soon as they scored could see heads drop.Whats the story with Stanway and Winterbottom.Heard rumour Stanway upset about some comments on social media .Dont know if true but would have thought he should be mentally strong enough to handle that.

Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
If Gordon scores that penalty game over!, but again macdonalds stupid backpass and bizarre substitutions we completely lost our shape!
I know it means nothing but Mcann who came and clapped the fans ( a lot didn't) said to me he hoped to stay, we definitely need his quality , Raglan and Williams did ok can't fault the young lad in goals!
Our lack of decent forwards and defender's is there for all too see !
Trouble is another rebuild we can't keep doing this !
Let's see what the next few weeks bring hopefully good news!

Foley on RC saying “…the lads have done everything we’ve asked of them since I came in…”. Well, they clearly haven’t have they Sam, sorry. He’s been put in a terrible position though - mates with the players, zero managerial experience and no chance to bring anyone in - and, as others have said, we’d have been better off with him on the pitch for this run-in rather than in the dugout. A great servant unfairly handed an impossible job.

Makes you wonder how the Directors feel investing £Millions into the Club only to end-up rock bottom of the League with no chance of getting their money back. Same old story going back years, ie: Paul Casson, etc. but not uncommon with the vast majority of League 1 and 2 Clubs.
Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
If that’s true about Stanway then he shouldn’t be a footballer. Grow up man. Got to take the praise and the criticism I’m afraid, and rightly so deserve more criticism than praise this seasonliverpoolann wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 5:51 pm This match typical of our season get chances score a goal ( unusual) then miss a penalty to let them back in it.Then a howler in defence by I think Williams to let them in to score has he got Welsh descendants any chance? Then go to pieces.Loads of shots blocked or off target . Did he say they only actually had 7 players signed, 2 of them sons of the coaches who coached the u16s?? One who cant get in holker 2nd team. It was never ready to start. The club were right to pull itMain Stand SeasonTct wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 5:50 pmCraig Rutherford in today’s post match show made some interesting and alarming points regarding the club and the Academy. Even if we’d have managed to stay up we it feels like we are just treading water without any obvious plan to develop or attract other investors (little chance of that now)
We did have an Academy programme lined up when Levi Gill was here. The club decided to pull the plug on it, citing that it was an expense that will take away budget from the first team without any guarantees it would produce homegrown talent who could make it into the first team. I fully understand that decision but there should have been an alternative to an Academy. A competitive “B” team picking up players who have been released from Academies higher up the pyramid, and the very best of local talent. Maybe a partnership with local youth teams so girls and boys teams of all ages can play for the club. We have nothing other than a first team.

I take it you heard it too???The funding was there from the EFL to run it. The seeds were sown it was never given the chance to grow. Listening to Craig it was obvious he was frustrated and wanted to say more but being the humble guy he is he kept his composure and held back.beachy01 wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 6:13 pmDid he say they only actually had 7 players signed, 2 of them sons of the coaches who coached the u16s?? I tend to think the club issued falsehoods into why it was pulled and it’s a fact the club wasted an opportunity in helping the club grow when making that decision.

I've never been so embarrassed to Barrow Afc Supporter. I've supported them through the leagues and every level, this group of players theres literally no words for them. They don't represent the town, they haven't cared all season, they couldn't wait to get off that pitch today, players are usually heartbroken, this bunch couldn't get off the pitch quick enough apart from Charlie McCann and fair play to him!
Ian Wood was trusted with our club by the board hang your head in shame!

My cousin was one of the 7 asked to sign so i know what was happening. He plays for Workington now. It wasnt ready, the club were right to pull it regardless of what Rudders says. Would have done more harm than good to the younger players to go aheadMain Stand SeasonTct wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2026 6:37 pmI take it you heard it too???The funding was there from the EFL to run it. Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
The youth set-up needs a separate thread.
Back to today's shambolic display please. Is Sam Foley the only guy on the planet who thought starting Hemmings was a good idea? Or did that cardboard cut-out Worrall also agree? What exactly does Worrall do for his money? Maybe another separate thread?
The substitutions were also pathetic, too little too late. Adam didn't have the heart or the wherewithal to question Foley about his bizarre selections.
Newby and Fletcher won us the Oldham game, barely featured since yet kept picking the rather limited Hemmings and equally inept motm Smith.
Supporters saying he's been thrown under the bus, Foley himself droning on about lads doing everything asked ffs it's a simple game. Bit of passion required though which every one of this bunch lack.
And finally, who the hek thought Gordon should still take the pens? He's particularly useless in this department as he's proved regularly!

Re: Barrow v Newport County match thread
No disrespect to local players but was there really any benefit in an academy? Especially when we needed to build a team to try and compete in the league and find that. People talk about local talent but I’m yet to see anyone really tearing it up at any level other than perhaps Workington and Holker, and any decent player will go to the likes of Preston etc.
What we needed was the old B team or an equivalent to bring players through from lower leagues, and give fringe players a chance to play games and keep fit.
As for the match the spirit and effort was there for an hour and we should’ve been out of sight, the penalty miss was the turning point and it wasn’t a surprise - why not let Rose on it after Gordon’s miss against Cheltenham. Newport hit the bar and grew in confidence although standard Barrow the equaliser was a gift an abomination from
Macdonald who for his pedigree has been crap for me. Then we were all over the place and wide open and a Newport winner was inevitable as they grew in confidence and we wilted and tired. We aren’t fit enough, and are weak physically and mentally. Newby and Anderson (probably our worst player) coming on weakens us and we’re down to nine men pretty much then. The inevitable happens and Newport score.
If you don’t take your chances and can’t see games out then you won’t win many and that’s why we are where are and deservedly so. I hope the board and players watched those Newport celebrations at the end and watch it back…that has to be some
Kind of motivation.
As for Sam foleys comments if the players can’t handle the pressure and it got too much for them then they’re in the wrong job - a lot are. Anderson, Newby, Raglan, macdonald, Hemmings, Mahoney are not league 2 players and I don’t want any of them anywhere near a team in the national league either.
