Barrow: Hurst, Flynn, Hessey, Pearson, Aldred, Baker, Harvey, Hunter, Boyes, Jackson, Almond
90+4: Rutherford replaced Almond
GOAL: Hunter (90+2)
Booked: Pearson (60, foul on Brooksby), Boyes (90+1)
Guiseley: Drench, Holdsworth, Meynell, Rea, Ellis, Bower, Brooksby, D Boshell, Holsgrove, Walshaw, Rothery
75: N.Boshell replaced Holsgrove
85: Wilson replaced Walshaw
Booked: Ellis (90, foul on Almond)
A good crowd of 1,372 ensured the usual floodlit cup atmosphere as Barrow kicked off towards the Holker Street end. In the 5th minute, a Almond run down the left led to a Baker strike from the edge of the penalty area which tested Steve Drench. In the 18th minute Louis Almond struck from long range but straight at the keeper.
There were no more real chances for the remainder of the half but Guiseley were becoming more comfortable in possession and Barrow more disjointed.
In the second half the visitors started to gain the upper hand, Holsgrove heading wide from a Holdsworth free kick eight minutes in.
As the hour approached, a foul by Pearson on Brooksby led to handbags as Barrow’s No.5 was booked after play (and the referee) had moved on. Previous Guiseley fouls had only resulted in a series of warnings.
Guiseley kept their momentum and in the 65th minute Drench’s long ball to Walshaw gave him only Hurst to beat, but luckily for Barrow he shot wide of the right post.
The game then degenerated into a scrappy affair, but Barrow almost fell victim to a Brooksby corner in the 87th minute, Meynell heading onto the crossbar.
This near escape appear to galvanise Barrow, Almond being fouled near the edge of the penalty area as the 90 minutes approached.
However, with two minutes of injury time on the clock, no-one could foresee Garry Hunter’s match winning super strike. Launched like a rocket from 20 yards on the right to the far top corner of the goal, it left the visitors stunned and Barrow elated. It had the same impact as Jason Walker’s injury time power shot against Eastleigh in the same cup three years ago!
Guiseley tried to rescue the match in the fifth minute of time added but Ellis’s long range strike was saved by Hurst. Victory was Barrow’s and Hunter’s shot will live in the memory for a long time.
