George Ray defender signs a two year deal

Barrow have moved to bring another new face to Holker Street in the form of defender George Ray, who joins from Exeter City on a two-year deal.

Just like new teammate Billy Waters, Ray is a product of the Crewe Alexandra academy. The 6ft 4in centre back rose through the ranks, making his professional debut in the 2013 Football League Trophy Final, and in doing so, became the first player to make his professional debut in a cup final held at Wembley Stadium.

Ray has made over 200 appearances in the EFL, with spells at Crewe Alexandra, Tranmere Rovers, Exeter City and Leyton Orient all appearing on the towering defender’s impressive CV.

The 28 year old spent time on loan at Brisbane Road in the latter half of last season, appearing in The O's 2-0 victory over The Bluebirds in April.

He’s 6’4”. Looks like we’ll be a massive side when we want to be.

Wiki has him at 5ft 8 but I'm sure you're right as he's described as a towering defender!

Good player at League Two level, some speculated he had a bit of a falling out with the manager, but it might just be that he fell down the pecking order after Sam Stubbs (our best centre back in a long time) came back from injury. Believe he had a falling out with Crewe's old boss, but might be wrong there.

A leader on the pitch, useful in the air from set plays. Could have a very good player on your hands here. Was rumoured to be on good wages at ECFC, so I wonder what he's on here (good enough to agree to cancel his contract with us at least).

Another way of looking at it “Could” Be that he now feels more wanted & valued plus he will most likely play way more games, IF that’s part of it he may be on similar or even a little lower wages but accepts that in exchange for extra game time, Who knows?

Maybe he just wanted to move back up north?

Just had a message back from an Os supporting pal of mine re. George Ray:

"I seem to recall that he gave a pretty good account of himself in the games he played".

He played against us twice last season and we didn't score in either game.
