Re: Southport tonight
Turning point last night, substitutions.
For some weird reason they decided to take off their No 9 and put on an extra defender with summat like 30 minutes left. That just invited us on to them and with Bayles getting his act together and substituting tactically (for once) we were able to capitalise on the space in midfield.
Agree with most of whats been said re. Skelts and Hunter. Baker's passing last night was gash until Harvey came on and gave him an option or two.
Great final 20 minutes, reminded me of our last BSN season where the never-say-die attitude got us late draws and wins at Holker St.

Re: Southport tonight
Yes it was one of those rare nights at Holker Street that makes you glad you stick with it. Teams that dare to go two up against us will only have themselves to blame now.
Special mention also for the heroic lady at the single Wilkie Stand turnstile who coped with a large influx of supporters in total darkness. “Is that a ten or a twenty?” Couldn’t one of the Directors have (a) Opened another turnstile? (b) Provided a candle at least?

Re: Southport tonight
I've been banging on about Alex Ray Harvey and the difference he'll make all season, genuinely do think he's the thing we're missing in midfield - that little bit of bite that only James Owen seems to be able to provide, but a natural pass and move game - half of our problems come from the want to keep possession but lack of players actually moving and showing for each other. Looking forward to seeing more of him.
Boyesies two goals were absolutely fantastic, the first just class pure and simple both in turn and finish. The second instinct that you just can't teach. Must say that for Boyes' first goal the turn and through ball from Richie Baker was equally as good as the touch and finish, that along with his wonder goal just about redeems the poor rest of the night for me, he does need to play with an Owen/Harvey though who's prepared to do his dirty work for him. Hunter's been dissapointing for me, lookeed a real signing in pre-season but has seemed, suprisingly, nervy and a bit off the pace for me.
Thought Louis Almond was superb, but treading on thin ice with his, albeit meager, push in the back of Simon Grand near the Holker End wall - if that'd of been the other way around we'd have been rightly outraged and calling for a red card (see Jennings/Blundell). Un-necessary and just asking for a sending off.
Agree about Hurst and his lack of willingness to come off his line, perhaps as a result of his Wealdstone/Cambridge injuries playing on his mind? After there second last night they had another corner which he came flying out and absolutely [SwearFilter], more of the same there please!

Oh, and last nights referee was the worst one we've had this season.

Re: Southport tonight
Exactly. People won't really comment on him because he wasn't particularly biased or make any "bad decisions" but thats because to be honest he made no decisions, he looked like he didn't even know the rules half the time. From what I saw we had a blatant penalty turned down, our first two goals probably had claims not to stand and they possibly should have had a penalty themselves. He also let there number 22 get away with murder, and worst for me was the freekick he gave when there goalkeeper fell over his own player with no Barrow player around, he merely heard a noise, turned around and saw the goalkeeper on the floor and guessed he'd been fouled so gave a freekick. Re: Southport tonight
Superb ! I'm just off to the Docs to see if he'll increase my blood pressure tablets cos I can't see me standing another 6-7 months of this. Saturday for starters. If we give Dartford a two goal start we won't see them for dust. They've won 8 of the last 10 games. Last night Telford scored 4 goals from just 6 shots and Dartford fans have described it as a one-off blip. They drew at Wrexham the other week and my son-in-law tells me its a long time since he saw a team who came to attack and didn't park everyone behind the ball. Last nights results proved that this is one crazy League this season and anything can happen. Just like to applaud Bayles' lightbulb moment in the last few weeks. Discovering at last that subs can be made before the last 5-10 minutes and can change matches.
Re: Southport tonight
Wasn't there last night so can't comment on that, however, from what I have read on here and seen in he past surely Harvey must start ahead of Hunter on Saturday. Hunter hasn't impressed at all in my opinion.
It's ok having wonderful comebacks but we have to stop giving silly goals away and making it hard for ourselves. Most of the time the luck won't be there and the comebacks won't happen.

Re: Southport tonight
What a night!!
Last twenty minutes were worth the enterance fee alone.
Although he never scored & perhaps tried to take on one too many at times, Almond will be the difference between us scrapping around the relagation places or mid table safety. When he plays like he has done this time around, defenders at this level just cannot handle him & either back off or two/three of them are on him straight away which then leaves space for others. Fantastic.

We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.
Re: Southport tonight
I get the feeling that we have people coming off the bench and making an impact (which is good), but then when given a starting place they don't shine. A general lack of consistent performances from individuals seems to be a problem at the moment - not many are doing it week in, week out.phil wrote:Harvey definitely made a huge impact for me, came on and did the job Hunter had been trying but failing to do, the whole team had confidence as soon as Harvey did his first couple of touches and looked safe as houses, rather than trying to cover Hunter. Hessey also gave us some much needed aggression for me.
MOM Almond for me, the only one who shone the whole match, if Harvey can replicate every week what he did in the second half then he won't be here in January.
Proper entertainment though

Re: Southport tonight
Agreed Jim and it's just what I remember Ray Wilkie saying once upon a time when asked what was the difference between a league player and a non-league player - consistency.

Re: Southport tonight
read most of above and agree their decision to hold on with 30+mins was weird but Bayles put jackson on then they put a defender on? then did anyone notice that almond went wide on the left to drag defenders away so there were gaps in midfield which ARH got into- this was the deciding tactic and hats off to Bayles and hoskins to try this -did they do simular at braintree??
