Stockport and us

When we won promotion to the Third Division by finishing 3rd in Division 4 in 1967 Stockport were promoted with us as Champions.
When we were relegated from Division 3 in 1970 we were next to bottom and Stockport were relegated with us as bottom club.
In our last season in the football league in 1972 we were 3rd from bottom of Division 4 and Stockport were one place below us with 5 less points and re-elected.,
Until last season we had not been in the same league as them for 40 years, now we are in a relegation battle with them. Hopefully we can both stay up!!!

Southport were also promoted with us in '67 and relegated in '70, and are currently in the same relegation battle - though it appears unlikely that all three clubs will go down together this time! Of the four clubs promoted in '67, only Tranmere have not had a spell in non League.

Hello there, Edgeley Park. Good times, bad times, eh? We share some highs and lows do our clubs!

Looking at the names that you recall above (all of whom I remember very well):

Malcolm Russell; good player, very solid and reliable pro.

Eddie Garbett; talented but bone idle. He made me angry!

Mick Hollis; not hugely talented but I had a lot of respect for Mick. I've rarely seen a more hard-working player. He began as a full-back for us but ended up leading our front line in our last season in the FL in 71-72 and was our top scorer! Got most of his goals through sheer hard work and running into positions to get on the end of things. Immense work-ethic.

Jimmy Mulholland: I've watched Barrow since 1962 and he is probably the most talented footballer (along with Colin Appleton) that I've seen play for us in all that time. Many of those who've been at Holker Street since those great days of 1967 have the greatest respect and affection for Jimmy and it is just sad that he passed away at a relatively young age in 1994.

Got to say we've got some cracking ex Stockport players in our squad this season...Rowe etc.... What the hell does that say about us!

Anyway Edgerley I'm still totally gutted we went down (although it did seem inevitable for some time for us). If you follow sport in any form coming last, or second for that matter or getting relegated just bloody hurts because we love competition. It makes the good times all the more sweeter. But at the moment that is of no consolation....for both of us.

Only good thing for me that when Barrow playing at Stockport is only a short drive away.

I have enjoyed reading thier forum this afternoon some funny comments. 42 to pre-season friendlies ect...

The biggest town after Wigan in the Greater Manchester area and our towns best football team plays in the BSN against the likes of Bracknell and Harrogate, population?....one horse!

Atleast we know what we are heading too some of that lot won't know whats hit them when they reach Workington.

I think it possible that Southport is possibly our most common fixture, that is we have played them more than any other club.
