We should have one at the first home game of the season for those that have passed in the summer and one at the last home game for those that passed during the season.

Only special players and supporters that have contributed a lot to the club should get one during the season.

I think it is sad that in this day and age one minute of the day is begrudged to pay respect to someone who has passed away. I am old enough to recall passers by stopping and bowing their heads when a cortege passed by. Old fashioned by today's standards but a lovely era to be brought up in.
At the end of the day I suppose we are at a football match.

I wouldn't argue with that at all, Holkerbird, and, believe it or not, I do still stop when a cortège goes by. But I think the question is where you draw the line before the minute's silence becomes devalued.

Being repectful can never be devalued and whatever people's opinions the minute's silence or applause if always impeccably observed by both sets of supporters.
I look at it like this. That person in their lifetime took the time to get ready and attend Holker St thus keeping the club in existence so we can carry on the legacy for the next generation.
I MINUTE is all.

It is sad when people pass away and if we know them a minutes silence means a lot, I've been told. I've not know a minutes silence for anyone I know personally and I would never ask for one, I think it has been seriously devalued.

A minutes silence at half-time when everyone is busy discussing the game or off to the bar, burger van, catching up with friends or heading for the toilet is a disgrace. People are not paying attention as they are busy with other things on their mind, even if people are respectful, it will never get the attention it deserves at this time. The last two times we have had it at half-time and I've heard nothing but grumbles from people around me, never heard that when it was done at the start of a game. At the start when everyone's attention is focused on the pitch ready for the game, this is surely the most appropriate time. After all that is what the minutes silence is all about, someone connected with the club and what we are about to watch is what they were involved in. Not half-time where in peoples minds it gets associated with more mundane things.

A handful of seasons ago we hardly had any silences, now get them often. I seem to recall having 3 in a row at one point, I don't think there is anything wrong with that, deaths happen and people associated with the club pass away over time. However it means less to me now than it did in the past. No longer a special moment to recall someone or learn about someone, as the case often is, when you've never heard of them. It has been devalued by the shear frequency and the half-time call is a serious dishonour and a relegation of the moment to a side note.

Stopping the half-time silences is a start. If the frequency continues to pick up the club seriously need to look at how to deal with it. Setting aside time at a home game each month or at the end of one season, start of the next like Chris has mentioned if it becomes too much. Bigger clubs limit the silences to prominent people as they get too many requests to comply with them all, I don't think we are that big a club. Either way the current way the silences are handled is shocking.

On that basis we might as well set aside a minute before every game because there'll be someone dies in the preceding couple of weeks who will have pulled on a pair of boots for the club or wrapped a Barrow scarf around themselves. I worked for Barclays for 10 years and I don't think for a second the bank staff and its customers will have a minutes silence when I pop my clogs (quite the opposite probably) nor, for future reference ;) , would I expect it at the soccer.

Nobody is begruding the time taken IMO, it just needs to be done properly so it still has meaning and respect. Otherwise it shows the opposite.

Please no more half time ones, if we can agree on anything, let it be that.

I agree that we should pay our respects BEFORE the game and I notice that most of the posts here contain the word "silence" so here's hoping it continues as silence, let's not have the (IMO) the trend of applause, now that I find deeply dis-respectful.
The first time I was aware of it was when Princess Diana cortege passed the palace

A minutes silence before the game is good, at half time is nothing.
A minutes applause is utterly pointless, it means nothing.

Barclay's staff will be holding a minutes silence for themselves whilst still alive I should imagine.
From previous posts I do think that the minutes silence is begrudged otherwise why are they proposing it is done once a year etc.
The applause tribute is the choice of the bereaved family and if these tributes can only be done at half time then I think we should drop it altogether or perhaps just tell fans not to bother dying would be a better option.

I think the problem is that, if we have a minute's silence for every fan, ex fan or ex player, anyone who has volunteered for the club, etc, we would have one at every home game. Is that something we would want to do? I don't begrudge it, but I think this would lead to it just becoming a thing that happens, rather than a meaningful act.

Better, IMO, to have a couple of minutes at the end of the season to remember those who have passed away during the year, and years past. We don't have a minute's silence every time a serviceman dies, we have it once a year in remembrance of them all, past and present... and I think that's more fitting, more respectful and less likely to become commonplace and lose it's very important meaning. We could have a section in the Programme mentioning the death, funeral time/date etc if the family want?

Like I say, I'm not opposed to the idea of a minute's silence even if we had one at every game, but I'm not sure it's necessarily the best way to do it

The applause thing is nonsense though, IMO, and was adopted at higher levels as a way to stop a few idiots causing a scene by making noise for a rival club's minute's silence... I've never known a problem with this at Barrow, and I see no need for it.

You won’t be best pleased with me then to learn that I overtook a funeral cortege in 1985. I just saw slow moving cars in front of me so when the road opened up I went past the lot. Getting past the last few cars I realised what I’d done and the hearse driver shot me a look which still makes me cringe to this day.

The horror, the horror. :?

Not as bad as the bread delivery driver that overtook and got between my granddaughter's hearse and our car so don't feel too badly about it as there's always someone worse than you.

For me it has to be before the game or not at all. Half times just not the time to do it.
