Barrow v Eccles Borough 1914

This was recently posted on Facebook

Hello - I am volunteering on a museum project to commemorate World War One. We are creating a timeline showing what life was like on the home front on 5 December 1914. Barrow AFC were playing Eccles Borough at Holker Street in the 5th qualifying round of the FA cup, I am trying to find out about the Barrow players and the club at this time. I have been to the archives but there is not much on the 1914.15 season. Just thought I would see if anyone has any info tucked away in a draw or a handed down memory. Anything at all would be of interest. Thanks in anticipation. Sharon

I'm not sure to which archives Sharon is referring, but the Barrow Archives at 140 Duke Street have microfiched copies of the Evening Mail and the Barrow News for those years - meaning a complete daily and twice-weekly report on the Club's matches and activities generally. Not easy to read and you can only face the screens for a limited time each visit ( unless your eyes are better than mine), but a mine of information.

Btw, and I'll add to this in a reply to pjdaly's post, it's not easy to match footballers' names with service records ( unless it's an unusual name, such as Percy Toone, or you just get lucky with a newspaper report ). The Club doesn't have its own records for this period. I understand much was thrown out when the Main Stand was rebuilt under a certain regime. I contacted the PFA ( the union already existed at that time) but they did not reply.

Good luck with this research

Found this it may not help much but interesting, taken from http://barrowfc.com/index.php?inc=hsn&version=146 Ralph may have a bit more information!

Fourteen new players were signed on for the 1913/14 season, mainly to provide manpower for the club's first ever reserve team, that were to play in the West Lancashire League. While the first team prospered, the second string was a financial disaster, for they showed a UKP252 loss on the season, but undoubtedly this reserve strength aided the club in its best ever season on the field, with a runners-up position in the First Division of the Lancashire Combination. The champions were Tranmere Rovers, whom Barrow had achieved the 'double' over!

Rather than capitalising on this, their first major success, they finished the 1914/15 season in a fifth from bottom position. The downward turn was mainly attributed to their losing most of the previous season's successful team. Together with several men who left during the summer of 1914, there was to be a total of eight who sought greener pastures during the campaign, including McKnight who was sold to Bury for UKP100. As World War One loomed over the horizon, many of the club's supporters found themselves making munitions for the forthcoming struggles, this prevented them from watching football, but as the team was flagging anyway, those still able to attend became fewer in numbers. The season ended on a grim note, for the club, a lowly position and money problems again, and in the Combination a suspension of normal matches. Many of the supporters and players, also enlisted for the forthcoming conflict.

Looking at that league table, things haven't changed much for Chester in 100 years.
