Barrow v York match thread

Watched most of the game on J-TV with RC commentary as a backdrop, but the commentary was around 20 seconds or so lagging behind the play.

Paul Cox surely has been Barrows best signing in all my days of following BAFC.

Everything coming along nicely & 2 massive games coming up next to whet even the casual fan must be wanting to visit Holker St to have a look for themselves, Great to see 1600+ there today.

My MOTM was Yates closely followed by Danny.

Turned away slightly annoyed after Williams' scuffed shot to be nicely surprised for the ball to be in the back of the net.

From where I was sat,it looked like he fired the ball into the perfect area only for Fry to turn it into his own net.Don't think it was a shot at goal.

Was right behind Williams when he nutmegged the fullback and ran into the area. His shot across the keeper was pulled too wide, was missing the far post by yards but was too far in front of Harrison to slide in and score. The most Harrison could have done was possibly stopping the ball going dead and getting it back into the danger area - something he's brilliant at.

In fact, Williams looked quite embarrassed when his 'shot' ended up in the net.

I still haven't seen a game yet this season but regularly watch the highlights. Harrison looks fantastic, holds the ball up well and is a real threat in front of goal.

Decent enough first half without being anything special but chances galore in the second half. A lot came from Jordan again and must've impressed any watching scouts yesterday.
Another week and another terrible referee, I said early on that if he keeps letting York get away with all the little fouls without dishing out a yellow it'll be a Barrow player who finally gets one.....we got two. We've had more than our fair share of crap officials already this season.
Great to see a good attendance, and even better that we didn't let them down as we have done so many times in the past. I did say we should be getting 1500 through the gates plus whatever York would bring and that was pretty much the case.

As well as the scouts mentioned by PC on Thursday, there was a geordie ginger bloke came in the shop for a teamsheet who was a scout for Portsmouth. He wouldn't let on who he was there to watch though.

We have a reproducible formula that's breeding success.

Our midfield retained impressive control throughout. Ryan Yates is very talented, 18, precociously mature of ability and - crucially - attitude. I haven't seen such a young lad be so influential, let alone a loanee. Wise on the ball, effortful, full of brave blocks and, as shown in the first half, ambitious enough to surge forward, he was a cajoling presence once more. Showing his commitment and defensive qualities, in one notable 1st half sequence of perhaps 10-15 seconds he made 2 blocks in quick succession then - clearly injured but his work not done - bravely tracked back to deflect a threatening strike from the edge of the area behind for a corner. Only then did he allow himself a therapeutic cry of pain and a fleeting rest. Alongside the quietly impressive and much more experienced Paul Turnbull, the midfield was secured and the defence robustly protected. Come full time, before disappearing down the tunnel Yates was the one player to sign autographs for a couple of doubtless admiring youngsters. He set a superb example.

Jordan Williams was livelier and more effective from the outset of the second half, more direct and influential, often switching flanks helping the freer forward movement that prised York apart. The precision backspun cross for Livesey's opener and the vision and execution of the reverse ball to Hannah (as seen on the highlights) are indicators of his quality on the ball, and he continually backs that up with work rate - both in attack and covering Anderton. Liam Hughes is a tank. Massive, trundling, full of menace, he was again the targetman on the right. And, though I've been critical of his role here previously, it worked well again, his physicality earning advanced territory for the likes of Williams and the consistently excellent Byron Harrison.

Danny Livesey was faultless. An amazing coup to have him anchoring our ascent from Conference North when he's evidently still of League 2 quality. As expected, Moussa Diarra is growing in stature alongside, increasingly more dominant, propelling clearing headers with increased distance. York's main threat came from wide surges from the diminutive Connelly and Whittle, but our fullbacks Anderton and Smith largely kept shape to quieten their danger.

As soon as I saw Williams with his dander up early second half, hemming York in - 27 away games without victory - I had high confidence we'd do what was needed.

Again, based on high work-rate and discipline, once more we outcompeted and outlasted our opponent. Paul Cox talks often about mindset and culture. We need to continue repeating these good habits.
