As I remember it was Mick Richmond who made a storming run down the right wing towards the steelworks end and powered in an unstoppable shot.
And if I remember correctly the other was a diving header from God.

Yes, S.B. (and, by the way, good to meet you the other week at the Dover game!) that Yeovil game is hugely memorable. Even though it's 38 years ago now it seems like yesterday to me, so bright does the memory burn in my mind. It's odd the way memory works but I expect the reason that match is so very memorable is because it was a big occasion, being the first National League (Alliance Premier as it was then called) match ever. And, in addition, it marked something of a climb back to better times after seven years in the NPL wilderness (which ranged from desperate to just a little less desperate). It might not sound spectacular but Moses McManus deserves a lot of credit for getting us up to 13th and 16th in the NPL in 77-78 and 78-79 respectively . . . after five consecutive seasons in the bottom four following our demotion from the Football League. Unfortunately, Brian didn't survive too long in that inaugural season in the Alliance Premier before being replaced by Mick Taylor but it should be said that getting us to 13th and 16th in the NPL – and opening the door to the newly formed "big" league – was a great achievement bearing in mind what had gone before. It was a Lazarus job for sure.

It was very fitting that a young Cowps got our goals in that 2-0 win against Yeovil on August 18th 1979, sending out a signal that he would be a force to be reckoned with over the next dozen years. In blazing sunshine, both goals came in the first half at the Steelworks (Crossbar) end, though it should be said that that end of the ground was just a gaping open space as the stunning piece of architecture that occupies the area now was two years away from construction. The first goal ever at that level was a really good goal; a short corner was played from the Trust House corner to the excellent right-back Mick Richmond who swung in a perfect cross. Soaring horizontally through the sky (in similar trajectory to how he would likewise do at Wembley 11 years down the line) the youthful God met it with his head and dispatched it into the top corner. The second goal was more mundane as he bundled home from the six-yard line when a low cross came in from the left.

The team was:

Kevin Thomas, Mick Richmond, Mark Wynn, Rob Thomas, Neil McDonald, Mick Taylor, Mick Worswick, Royston Taylor, Colin Cowperthwaite, Dave Busby, Barry Diamond.

Later in that 79-80 season Glenn Skivington and Kenny Gordon appeared on the scene.

The crowd was 2027. Like you S.B., I remember talking with mates on the way back home and the feeling was one of optimism that we could be okay at this level with this team. In the end that was true as we finished a reasonable 14th but we did suffer a dip which led to the departure of Brian McManus. The crowd soon lost the buzz of this new league however, for the attendances for the next two home matches dropped by almost half to 1133 and 1030 and by the time we got to the final home game of the season it was down to 652. The fascination of the big new Non-League set-up had worn off. Despite that, we did very well, finishing 9th and 8th in 1980-81 and 1981-82, positions we have only now managed to surpass. But don't ask what happened in 1982-83 . . . . . instead, skip to Vic Halom!

The ref for that match was George Courtney who was quite famous at the time and only a week or so earlier had been the man in the middle for the Charity Shield Wembley Final.

Years later I got to know a number of the Yeovil backroom staff who'd been at the match. They told me how they had to use Barrow's away shorts that day because Yeovil's either clashed or hadn't been packed. I can't remember what the reason was but I think the Glovers played in possibly orange shorts that afternoon. I was at the match and remember thinking at the time what a strange kit they were wearing.

The Yeovil guy who'd been with the Glovers team says he would never forget the game because after the match the players were given Pie and Peas, I'm presuming in what was then the Bluebird Club and one of the Yeovil players, tripped and dropped his plate and it landed all over George Courtney. He said he was covered in Pie and Peas. Complete accident but apparently it was one hell of a mess.

It's amazing what people remember.

Thanks PJ. I guessed you might be the one to fix my fragmented memory. And thanks also to Colin Appleton (I hope your service to our club is being well rewarded in paradise) for the mention of George Courtney. And yes I should've remembered him because his was by far the most impressive CV on the pitch that day with an UEFA Cup Final, FA Cup Final and Charity Shield under his belt as well as two World Cup finals. Refereeing royalty indeed. Quite staggering really when you consider the quality and experience of the current crop of refereeing hopefuls that turn up at Holker Street.

Yes, thanks Colin Appleton . . . I had forgotten that George Courtney was referee that day against Yeovil. I do however remember that he was back again two or three years later (I think it might have been a match against Barnet). The reason I remember that one is because of my astonishment . . . why? . . . because Mr Courtney completely lost it! The match slipped out of his control, his decision-making seemed to go completely awry and he gave the impression of being rattled. Maybe that's the effect Barrow fans have on referees??? I just remember being amazed that this highly rated official lost the plot. We did get some leading referees back in those early days of Non-League National. If I recall correctly, we also had Pat Partridge for one game, a leading ref of some standing who had also appeared at Holker Street once or twice during our League days.

Pat Partridge; that's a name from the past - he was a top refereee at the time. As indeed was George Courtney.

We and other Alliance Premier League sides seemed to get our fair share of top officials at that time; I think that they were all expected to cover lower level games as well as Division One as part of their role. And of course they were part timers, so presumably there was little or no difference in the money they received. Unlike now, when the chances of us getting a Premier League referee are nil, except possibly for a FA Cup tie against a top side.

Think Colin Appleton is still with us unlike poor Mick Richmond.
Unless you mean that Colin goes to the Paradise Bar in the Blue Oyster?

Yes indeed. Have just checked t'internet and it appears the Colin is still with us Age 81. I can only think that the fact that the reason he couldn't carry on as BAFC manager (as reported at the time) was his ill-health has somehow affected my memory. For some reason I had formed the impression that he passed away some time ago. I am truly happy to find that this not the case.

Apologies to Colin and if by chance the Colin Appleton posting above is indeed THE Colin Appleton then double apologies. Thanks Pedro.

Colin's playing career did not end when he left us. He was player manager at Scarborough, and I remember him playing for them at Holker Street near the end of the 72-73 season.

I know it was a long time ago but I grew up with the club in the Mid-Late Sixties and it has always been my view that under Colin Appleton's far too brief reign Barrow were at their very best - probably in our entire history as a club.

I realise that memories of Colin Appleton generally will tend to focus on his time at Leicester City, but having found out that Colin has been with us all these years I now wonder why it is that the club has not maintained more contact with him.

S.B. . . . . Whilst on holiday in Scarborough just less than two years ago (July 2015) I happened to get talking with the hotel manager and he turned out to be a long-time follower of Scarborough and recalled matches against us back in the NPL in the 1970's. He said he'd bumped into Colin at the vet's only a week earlier! Colin didn't just manage Scarborough but was, I believe, born there, so he has clearly returned to his roots and appears likely to live out his years there. What I would like to know is why, when Colin fell ill, we didn't appoint a caretaker-manager until he was well enough to resume because he did of course recover and went onto manage for quite a number of years. Instead, for whatever reason, we got Norman Bodell in as a permanent replacement. Enough said.

His illness always seemed shrouded in mystery to me but, then, there was no social meejah to enlighten us ;) and it's not mentioned in any of the biogs I've seen.
Nice article here about him:

According to programmes at the time, Colin Appleton resigned (because of his ill health? - it may well have been stress, as mentioned above) so the possibility of him resuming as manager probably didn't arise; indeed, he suggested a couple of names of possible successors to the club. Instead, Fred Else was appointed as Caretaker - Acting Team Manager as described in the programmes - for a while until Norman Bodell was brought in as a permanent replacement towards the end of the season.
