Barrow AFC v Leicester City January 1968

Post by The Tomahawk Kid » Fri Feb 16, 2018 4:12 pm

I recently read that a historical review of the FA Cup 3rd round encounter between ourselves and The Foxes had been published in the EM recently. I visited the EM website to try and locate it but was unable to find it. Can anybody provide a link for this?

This was the first ever Football match I attended so it would be interesting to read.

Can't help with that, but I do have an old scrapbook containing the NWEM Sports Final report on the day of the match. I can scan it and post here if you're interested?

I was at the game and remember it being very exciting, seeing Shilton, an horrendous own goal and the Leicester fans pulling a downspout off the Pop Side roof and approaching the Holker End with it!

The mail photo of the Barrow squad is not the one that took on Leicester, it is Don Mcevoys promotion winning team 1966/67.

You're quite right there, Scrube.

It was a really good game but going 2 goals down and taking until fairly late on to pull one back it never quite reached the sustained excitement of the previous season's match against Southampton.
It all comes 'round again.

Fifty years on and Barrow hold the unwelcome record of most appearances in the third round of the FA Cup without ever progressing further, having tried and failed a dozen times.

surely theres teams that havent progressed to the fourth round more than a dozen times?

Yes, the vast majority haven't. But then they haven't reached the 3rd round either.

Here are the scanned pictures & report from the Evening Mail. I had to split the report into two as the full page doesn't fit in the scanner.
