CORONAVIRUS!

Post by SayitagainSam » Fri Feb 28, 2020 3:08 pm

'The rapid spread of the virus has raised the prospect of the Government ordering the cancellation of all sporting events in the UK for more than two months, something that could mean some football fixtures never being played. The entire season could be declared 'NULL & VOID'. There would be no guarantee that League leaders would be crowned Champions and that bottom clubs would be relegated. All Switzerland's Premiere Division games and Italy's Serie A games have been cancelled this weekend and also Ireland v Italy Rugby Union fixture'. - Daily Telegraph

Just our luck! No worries, there's always next Season....

Surely they’d just use a Duckworth Lewis type method and crown us as rightful champions.

They can do that now for me. Save on the STRESS

You can see it happening can’t you. They’re already talking about scrapping the Olympics. Liverpool supporters won’t be happy.

Already booked my flight for Easter to go go to the Halifax and Yeovil games, will be just my luck if it's all cancelled, fingers crossed but it doesn't look good! Can't even buy a face mask here at the moment all sold out. Forza Bluebirds.

Even if this did happen, the Football League are one club short after Bury's demise so would presumably want to take in an extra club for next season.

They'd probably offer the spot to Hereford though.

with Bury having gone out of business they'd still promote one National League club to the EFL to balance the number. The only way they could do it is off the best PPG of the teams in the National League. Which is us.

Would clubs insurance cover any cancellations ? Im thinking if there are no games who pays the players wages ?

It would be chaos. I can almost hear the sound of very expensive corporate lawyers sharpening their pens at the very thought. The thought of depriving Liverpool of the Premiership title would be unthinkable. Irrespective of whether you support them or not to nullify the current Premiership season would bring it into total disrepute and seriously damage the integrity of the competition. Dont see it happening.

With regard to our own situation, there is one fact of course that has not been mentioned which is that currently the EFL are a team short. Now if you nullify the season then technically it would mean that you had to replay the entire season as is in all divisions. Its pretty inconceivable that Bury would be reinstated into Division 1 and if you put them in Division 2 to increase the compliment, then the EFL would not have nullified the season but essentially have discriminated in favour of a club that they had already turfed out and against any NL club that had played by the rules. Again sound of writs rustling in the wings.

Dont think you can nullify the season. The consequences and precedents created would be extremely far reaching. You either delay the end of the season for a period. This would be practically impossible for any team providing players for the Euro national teams. So it would only work if all international sporting events were cancelled (I actually think this is far more likely to happen). It would also probably mean that the dates for the 2020/21 seasons would need adjusting.

Alternatively you freeze or stop competitive games at a certain point and go with the League positions at that time. Clubs in very challenging positions would object but I suspect that this solution might hold water legally given that we are 75% through the season. Another solution might be to find some way of limping through to the end of the season even if you have to make clubs play behind closed doors. An awful prospect but better than pretending the season didn't happen.

One last thought - if 2500 people in this country die from influenza in an average year (the bulk of those within the first three months of the year), and influenza is a highly communicable infection, how many need to perish before we decide all public events need to be postponed for the sake of public health? I do realise that you can get immunised against the most prevalent of influenza each year but you take my point.

Dont Panic.

Pointless speculation about nothing. Are you all bored stuck at home in this wet and windy weather?

Just returning from 4 nights in Rome and very enjoyable it was too. Never seen so many mask wearers. Saw many signs saying no masks in pharmacies.🥺
