Having a laugh

Post by Holkerbird » Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:11 am

Putting aside all the doom and gloom let's recount some of the more memorable away trip escapades.
I'm sure lots of you have some humerous tales to impart.

One of my favourites was the sight of Daz Boyle aka Ruins and Stu Nipps aka Van der Nipper stripped to the waist in a service station partaking in a Sumo wrestling match. Both were of the stature required of the sport but after doing the necessary circling of each other and, before coming to grips, were informed if they didn't stop the police would be called. They then took to their toes in a Stavros Flatley manner and the coach made a fast exit.
I still have those images burned on my brain. 😩

Not an away day but still funny.

A group of us sat in the stand and a mate brought along his grandad old wooden rattle (to compete with elaine)
We were sat directly above some away fans and as elaine started to swing her rattle, I grabbed my mates old rattle and proceeded to swing along too only to see the head of the rattle fly off its handle a crack the old chap in fronts head, shortly followed by me trying to catch the bloody thing and of course me going arse over tit and landing on poor chap too! I did of course apologise with everyone around be absolutely pishing their pants laughing!!

Tiddler getting skittled down three terraces at Aldershot by an irate CA on conceding a goal, who then wanted to strop off in a huff until he came to an immovable object.
Was one of those did that really happen moments aah the guys fine, then pish yerself for ages moments that you frequently get in CA’s company.

I remember being at an away match at Alty, some time in the 2000's I think. Proper ding dong of a match we scored, they equalised, we scored another, they of course equalised. It was a real match. During the celebrations for our second or third goal I remember Duff (Alan Duffin) taking an almighty tumble down the terracing and gashing his shin open, but being a real trooper he didn't go and get any treatment.

Also remember a certain Spike, daughter of T2T, finding the only pothole around Wembley and braking her ankle I think. Tom and I helped her limp to the front doors of Wembley where the medical team took her into their care. Hopefully Tom can tell you the rest.

Two Wolves fans got onto a train rammed with Barrow fans on the way to Euston on the day of the FA Trophy final in May 1990. They looked decidedly nervous as one asked rather tentatively what team we supported; when someone said ‘Barrow’ they looked none the wiser. Anyhoo when they relaxed a bit we got a good craic going with them and when we disembarked at Euston a thunderous chant of ‘Barrow, Barrow, Barrow’ went up with the two Wolves lads sans scarves joining in wholeheartedly.
We will follow the soccer, over land and sea...

Mentioned this before but certainly one of my funniest memories.
We went by mini bus to watch the Barrow v Enfield FAT semi at Kidderminster (?) where we’d arranged to meet up with a few lads living in other parts of the country. After the game Binny j had a bit of time to kill before his train back into London, and made one of the biggest football mistakes of his life, he came back to the truckers car park where our mini bus was parked up. We’d all had a few drinks so a quickly hatched plan of stripping him off seemed to actually happen before we knew it. He ended up in his trainers and Union Jack boxer shorts with his cash and train ticket. Funny watching his lily white legs running between the parked up trucks. He had to travel all the way back to a London by train “dressed” like that, without getting arrested.
His jeans and t shirt were pinned to the notice board in the Bay Horse awaiting his next visit up here.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Now that is a thread on its own Ste. Was that your first trip with Alex?
Bus breaking down 10 miles from the ground. Team bus sailing past us uncaring to our plight. Evatt would have sent it back for us I expect.
Some sort of marathon event taking place around us.
Then discovering the lay by was actually a local bus stop.
Some had set off to walk and Tidds had phoned for taxis for us.
We hopped on the bus much to the fright of the locals on it. They soon came round and enjoyed the Barrow songs in particular the elderly lady resplendent in her fur coat.
The locals coming to the shop doors to see their local bus commandeered by the singing Barrow fans with scarves waving weaving it's way down the High St.
Dropped us off nearest to the ground where we came across the strangest of pubs. In the middle of a residential street and was two houses made into one--the adjoining wall being knocked through. A decent watering hole though.
Arriving at the ground the Kidderminster officials were very obliging and made a room available for us to store our bags.
Then the afore mentioned Dancing Stewards began their performance. Thus named because of the hi viz vests they were wearing courtesy of a local company who knew nothing about their generosity---well not at that stage. The "purloiner" telling everyone to make sure they weren't photographed with the company's name visible.
Well guess who was the only one who flouted that instruction. Yes in the EM and spent all Monday morning hiding from someone looking for him.
The home crowd were cheering the Barrow fans and the Head Steward came down and shook hands all round.
The coach had been repaired 20 mins after we had left so was able to drive us home. It was a loose screw.
We won the match.
The reason for the hi viz waist coats is another story---the previous game at Northwich Victoria. Guns, police dogs. Agghhhh
Thanks to John Little, Kieran Robson, Stu Nichol and Alan Duff for forming the ISC They were the best days of Barrow AFC for me. Some great days out with great people.
