I'm always being pedantic but try hard not to and for that reason didn't mention Wintergreen earlier missing the hyphens from our town name. (I'm sure he is writing it out correctly 200 times at this very moment on lined paper in his very best handwriting)

I think we have discussed this previously but at the time of transition from Ziggers to Bluebirds (circa 1967), Donald Campbell was in the news a lot with his water speed record breaking attempts in 'Bluebird' on Coniston Water which is technically in the Furness area. It was said that this was a factor in naming the new watering hole at the ground (now a body shop garage) and subsequently the football club in the light of a controversial play about football violence being screened and widely performed in the UK called ''Zigger Zagger'.

Most people would assume you're talking about Cardiff City if The Bluebirds was mentioned.

I’ve heard the rugby called that occasionally. Bluebirds is pretty lame l suppose more so as they can only be found in North America l think. Also we would have to be ‘The Boatbuilders’ to be more accurate. We all know the difference between a boat and a ship l take it?

"Bluebirds" is obviously not a unique nickname either. Cardiff City and Chippenham Town have the name also it and I think there are others out there with it too.

The new Social Club is making progress. What's more, it has a name now. Mrs McAllister of Highlands Avenue, Barrow, offered what the judges considered the best suggestion and she wins a prize of one year's free membership. Her suggestion - "THE BLUEBIRD". She might have all unwittingly suggested a nickname for the team too! We might not be exactly in full song just now, but as we play in an all blue strip the Bluebirds seems as good a title to bestow upon us as a football team as any other. Think about it! We have generally been dubbed "The Shipbuilders" when journalists have wanted a name for us, but we have never really had a universally accepted nickname.

Mrs McAllister considers that "The Bluebird" has one or two things in its favour as a title for our new Club. There is that all blue strip of course; there is the fact that blue is the colour of both Barrow football clubs, and there is the fact that Campbell's "Bluebire" [sic] was so frequently associated with Coniston and the Lake District. We share the judges' view that it is a very apt title.
