Bolton asked Barrow for permission to talk to Evatt. I would call that an official approach.
The reality is very probably that unofficially everybody has talked to everybody else and that a number of parties have got very comfy with the prospect of IE leaving and have conveniently neglected the elephant in the room which is a contract.

Having spent many years working on contracts I can say with some conviction that the footballing community has a great deal to learn when it comes to contract fulfilment issues. Both sides tend to use them as bargaining chips to "do a deal" and generally speaking behaviour around contract management is pretty deplorable because its not ultimately in anybody's interests to enforce them.

However this does not mean they cannot be enforced and that a very well constructed contract cannot stop a charging rhino dead in its tracks. I hope and believe that is what Paul Hornby has in front of him. That everything has its price and the contract spells out what that price is. In this respect Bolton are probably in a sh*t place because there are few obvious ways the contract could probably be legitimately avoided. The club has just achieved promotion it has no need to separate itself from its management and a legitimate desire to move forward with it in tact. If the manager walks he has breached his contract, could be sued and would be reputationally damaged. The punishment for Bolton could be much worse if they were seen to be enticing a manager - and remember that Bolton are in a precarious position.

So I think Paul Hornby may be the one with the most leverage at this moment. I do hope so and I hope he screws Bolton for every penny. But if you want my view it is in summary that if Bolton are actually prepared to pay the £250k for Evatt/Atherton (or anything approaching that amount) then those running Bolton FC should be carried off to the funny farm. It is truly bonkers to even consider paying that for a manager unproven at this level before you've even factored in salaries, pension contributions and other fees. But then nobody at Bolton seems to be bothered with their balance sheet at the moment.

A very good analysis, SB. I don't think you're far away on any of the points made.

Good to know that fans of other clubs have seen FVs books and are experts on our finances, they are not baulking at the compo in any way shape or form, so all these comments on our finances are absolutely ridiculous.
I.m sorry, but you don't need to be any sort of Financial expert to keep up to speed with what's gone on since the FV.s consortium came together starting with the one man with money involved in it bailing out when he found out the others didn't have the financial wherewithal that they'd led him to believe.

Then we have the remaining members of the consortium pulling every string they could to reduce the amount of cash they'd have to put up. blackmailing the administrators by stating that if they didn't get the hotel they wouldn't buy the club [ and that should be your first clue to where we are today in that the hotel or at least the profits from it that it had been capable of delivering in the recent past ] was a major part of their ongoing business plan.

When the members of FV put themselves forward to the FL for what used to be called the fit and proper person test I have it on good authority that they were only approved because quite simply they were the only game in town and it was them or lose another of the founding members which the league had been bending over backwards to do in the light of the shambles they.d created at Bury.

So that brings us to where were today where the facts are even before the shutdown the hotel was achieving nowhere near the occupancy, rack rates or indeed profits that were needed to provide the money for the football club that was shown in FV.s business plan and whats a fact whether some of the Horwich fans who've shown up on here like it or not the hotel has been shut for the last 3 months so not only has it not been producing that money for the football club what it has been doing is creating a black hole that FV.s are having to fill this isn't something out of the ordinary it's something that all hospitality businesses are having to deal with.

Now i.m not saying that they're incapable of raising the 250k but you can be sure that if they do it won't be coming out of the club's coffers and my understanding is that if the money is injected by a third party it would either have to be completely written off as an "investment" or injected as a loan which may well go against the financial terms that they are currently operating under.

I.d be pretty sure that when they included IE on their not very short list they weren't aware of the level of compensation required or the determination of the Barrow board to stick to every last word of it and were hoping they could get it down to something like 20 grand which they could recover by just reducing wage budgets slightly but a quarter of a million quid is another matter whatsoever and it's not as if there aren't other suitable candidates like Clough who wouldn't cost them a penny. So now things have been made clear for them they have a simple decision to make is Ian Evatt worth quarter of a million quid more than somebody they could get for nothing and then you have to ask yourself will they have satisfied the needs aims and aspirations of someone who knows where he stands at Barrow and that his time will undoubtedly come again at a club in much more settled circumstances financially.

What's the end game here Johnno? This isn't constructive, friendly or logical; do you just want to bait folks on here or do you actually feel you have something to offer? You criticise peoples grammar so i'm going to assume you can write a sentence to convey your objectives?

C'mon man

I am simply here to keep up to date with the situation that has developed between our clubs, not here to cause disruption, but I do find banter lightens the moods.

Makes total sense. Young manager. Been given a huge chance in management with Barrow.
Improved contract mid season that was extended with a decent buyout clause to protect our investment in him.
Had a great season, now Bolton (cant pay a bill doesn't pay a bill) wanderers come in for him.
Well chaps....you know the figure... pay up or move on....its that simple...

Was meant to be live on the radio I heard and swapped it for a pre recorded interview, no questions regarding future was asked is that wrong?
Bit like Boris Johnson and Andrew Neil then.
Suppose it could be awkward if he has to give a straight answer.
