The biggest take-away from this article is that their mouth-piece Marc Iles has admitted that they have agreed to pay up-front. Bolton have already given in to one of Barrow's demands - now they just need to get the Pink Floyd dude to dip into his pocket for that extra £100k.

Not sure this is the right judgement call for Evatt, and throws future judgements under scrutiny as well. Having said that I think he's burned his boats (or boots) at Holker Street.

Sad really because it would have been good to see him come back and take a bow with the team when the time is right.

If he does go I wish him well and thank him for what he did whilst he was with us.

Cant see how he could come back if he was not to go and it not look almost untenable if he did, a week is a long time in football, indeed, but what a bloody week it's been. Just wish we the fans were given something so we could at least move on with. As is often said there is no one bigger than the club.

Same, really didn’t want him to go last week but it’s dragging out now and he needs to go. Let him go with our thanks for getting us promoted and hope we play them last game of the season at holker street and we can relegate them with a win.

Definitely a tendency within the Bolton fans community to see the process as being inevitably one of big team always wins. And to be honest they'd generally speaking be right in the sense that this is how football works at this level and has done for decades. But it does create a very lazy attitude in supporters though and shows how little people actually know or care to know about their clubs.

When you have a business model that is generally sustained by an external owner pumping money into what would otherwise be a bankrupt entity, it creates this view of normality that says when things look bad somebody somewhere will put their hand in their pocket because … well that's just what happens. Until as Macclesfield have discovered they dont. That's why the lockdown situation is so dangerous because it threatens their life support.

Sad fact - both Swindon and Plymouth (promoted L2 clubs this season) could not function were it not for hand-outs from their respective owner's businesses, each of which has reportedly had to put £6m from personal resources into sustaining a promotion push. And yet despite that, the combined debt that those two clubs will carry into L1 is estimated to be circa £20m. Somebody tell me that this does really represent success and that these are not in reality dead clubs walking.

As long as clubs are allowed to do this, the cards are naturally stacked in favour of teams like Bolton. But as you point out Russ, this doesn't really suggest that Bolton's negotiating has been particularly effective. This will have gone on for over two weeks of active engagement before it moves to a formal stage and may cost someone in and around Bolton a lot of money payable in advance. It might also not include the entire package if Atherton does not follow. Given that its pretty clear that the outcome is one that IE was looking for anyway, I dont see the prospective result (at this point) as being one where I'd be admiring Boltons' dominance.

Interesting question as to when the "new" season starts. If the new season did start on Wednesday then for example were Macclesfield to be subsequently expelled from L2 then rules (what are they anyway?) could technically prevent Stevenage from being reprieved or replaced and L2 would be back down to 23 clubs next season...again.

My guess is that officially the season is still current until the outcomes are confirmed via the EFL AGM. Until this has happened you cant publish a fixture list for next season. So the season wont end until the last play-off has been played. This I suspect will be the NL play-off final or the Championship play-off final whichever comes last. So there's at least another month of speculation of some kind.

With the NL play-off of course there is the added complication that the FA still has to sanction the outcome of the NL season and ratify play-offs which it is not apparently 100% happy about in relation to step 2 play-offs. So technically you would argue as have (apparently) Bolton that no team including us has been promoted yet from the NL - thereby costing us money. Fortunately there is a spare place in L2 anyway and as the NL have declared us champions there is now a very very small chance only that that decision could be challenged.

Lastly the Premier League has to finish and confirm that relegation will happen to the Championship. Expected - but not yet confirmed. Again not likely to happen in July.

So the season is not over until absolutely everybody says it is and until it even looks like its all over there are so many things that could conceivably yet happen that no one is going to admit to it being over. This is football.
