Grimsby's last FL visit to Holker Street

The programme for our last FL match at home to Grimsby, in September 1971. It was a drab 0-0 draw.

The editorial refers to a League Cup match against Preston a couple of weeks earlier, when there was some trouble on the terraces. I wonder if, nearly 50 years later, any of the club's current supporters will own up to being one of the 'naughty boys'?

That will be the Dave Worthington that played for us at half-back lining up for Grimsby at right-back. Better games against Grimsby were in the cup when we drew them in successive seasons around 65/66; 66/67, I think and they were in Division 3.

Love reading the old programme notes although this reads like what it is- 50 years old! One thing that always strikes me when reading articles from yesteryear is the use of language and how much writing / reporting styles have changed. Some words and terms used probably wouldn’t get past the editor these days and would probably be deemed too offensive / antiquated to use.

For me a few interesting points on one page...

- Reference to the club as “Barrow In Furness AFC Ltd” I wonder when that title was last used.
- The old crest- I must admit I prefer it.
- article makes reference to the Holker Street End. Not, as some refer to the “Holker End”. I guess you’re are in either camp on that one.
- kit- White/Blue/White. I recognise this is the classic Barrow kit, though we have gone Blue/Blue/White in recent seasons. Our new third kit shirt is more like a first choice home shirt for many.
- we had a President as well as a Chairman, Vice Chairman and a board of 10 Directors. Did these people own the club back then?. Nevertheless- seems a lot for the size of club. Tough times for the club around the corner, I presume many of this board were at the helm when we went out the league.
- finally- pick up a new home in Holbeck for £3625. Inflation calculator puts that at £51500 today....

Love the "young hooligans" being described as "gentry" but deemed a danger to fish were they to be thrown into the nearby reservoir! No doubt much offence would be taken to such a phrase today

To be fair, the financial sector fuelled the house price boom. When I bought my first house in 1972 for 3,750, I could only get a mortgage for my salary plus half my wife’s. Decades later, it was 4 times combined salary.

Remember Dave Worthington cruising up to the Paper Mills,where I worked,every night in his cadillac to pick up his wife, Wasn't for very long though as she was sacked for giving a director an ear bashing with some very un-ladylike language.Notice from his Wiki page he spent many years since scouting abroad for the likes of Chelsea,Sunderland and Blackburn.
Mention of Grimsby games in the FL reminds me of the FA Cup tie in the 60's in the midst of one our regular financial crises. The game went to a second replay at Old Trafford where the gatemen donated their pay for the night to our survival cause.
