Newport v Barrow match thread
Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
Most of the goals we concede are poor- that’s the reality. 1st goal yesterday- weak challenge for the ball. Does anyone think otherwise? These aren’t great team goals undoing us, these are direct, usually only two or three players involved in the build up and no more than half a dozen passes. Meanwhile we try and build up with too much play in our own half. We’ve got to be more direct and quicker. Its league 2- direct, physical and quickest route to the goal mouth is the order of the day. Above all else- you’ve got to win the battles with the player your marking.

Personally agree with the above…sambino wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 12:07 amGreat post totally agree we need stability and the same back room all the way through closed reason we need training sorted for all preseason and someone with league experience to be CEO in imho which wont be cheapMethuselah wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 12:00 am I think some people on this forum.need a reality check.Listen to what the guy from Newport said about it taking his club a few seasons bumping around the bottom of the league before things became more settled and they were able to have a settled side and make a push for promotion.
Barrow AFC spent 48years out of the Football League and in one amazing season went on a fantastic run eventually gaining promotion. Then our manager left followed by two of our best players only to be replaced by two inadequate managers and if it hadn,t been for Rob Kelly agreeing to stay we would now be in the National League.
I agree that some of the organisation has been amateurish at times, but other promoted clubs kept their managers and most of their side together, something Barrow did not.
We as supporters have to be patient. It may take two more seasons before we start to make decent progress. You also have to remember that the club does not have a bottomless pit of cash and will never be able to compete with chairmen and owners who are pumping money into clubs which isn,t generated through their club receipts and presents a false landscape
I think we should stick with Mark.Cooper, because I think he will turn this club round. At times this team has played well and will eventually come good.
Keep the faith.

having watched the Salford documentary and money pumped in all credit needs to go to the Barrow board for the hard work they’re putting in on and off field.
although things aren’t great results wise establishing stability is priority ..

Yes if your in the UK use a VPN and log into a server in another country you can watch every game whilst living in the uk and the club gains financially. I think it cost around 13 Euros a game.SayitagainSam wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:28 amWas my understanding that Sat. games are not available via your Home Club on ifollow?mickmike wilson wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 1:10 am

Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
I agree with that, Jonty. It was interesting listening to the co-commentator yesterday (sorry, missed his name, ex Scunthorpe manager I think), who came across as an 'old fashioned' manager. He was very critical about what he saw as the modern obsession with having defenders who can play out from the back. He suggested they were valued more for that than for their primary task, which is to defend. On the other hand, I guess if you boot the ball clear every time it just comes back at you.Jonty wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:16 am Most of the goals we concede are poor- that’s the reality. 1st goal yesterday- weak challenge for the ball. The speed and directness argument is important, though. I see matches where it is crying out for someone to run at defences. For all his faults and sometimes infuriating inconsistency, Josh Kay is a player who at least will try to do that. And also, on reflection, I think I agree that many of the goals scored against us in open play are two or three qucik passes forward and then a well taken goal. I thought Newport's second goal yesterday was good play, though it started when we were robbed of the ball in midfield. It's not about missing out midfield by booting the ball up to a front man, it is about moving it forward quicker. We did it against Barnsley when there was nothing to lose. Are we too cautious in possession?

Regarding Matt Platt, Just to throw a spanner in the works, He signed a 2 year contract with a one year option so any movement away from Barrow he would have to be released from that before he could move anywhere, Barrow could in fact trigger that clause so any move could be made very difficult for him although we all appreciate we would not want to keep someone who is not happy here.
Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
You can build from the back Jim if there are runners and vision. Lost count of the games I’ve seen where Platt has the ball and is the pivot to get us going yet we are static and you can see his frustration at lack of options- then we go wide with it in our own half, literally our own defensive third and we’ve got the ball close to the touch line.

Russ Wilcox. Most recent job was being sacked for failing at York City so I wouldn’t put too much store in his opinions.Jim wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:53 am It was interesting listening to the co-commentator yesterday (sorry, missed his name, ex Scunthorpe manager I think), who came across as an 'old fashioned' manager. Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
And that's why Jonty I and others keep banging on about 3 at the back we haven't got the players in defence to do this as regards Platt it looks as though the injury he had has took a yard of pace off him whilst people ( because of Cooper stupidly remarking about someone signing a pre contract) are now targeting him but it's not just Platt both goals yesterday first one Jones completely missed his header and them brough is caught day dreaming, the second brough backs off instead of trying to block/ tackle the guy and in both instances brough then tries to blame othersJonty wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 10:27 am You can build from the back Jim if there are runners and vision. Our defence is shambolic at times you have Farman doing his usual hysteronics and blaming everyone and now we see this every week ffs why don't we just get on with it! Jonty you made a good point about Platt when he first came here Herd talked him through his game as well as the others he was a calming influence and we desperately need someone like him. I had to laugh the other night when someone said oh for a Danny livesey, and Simon grand Mark salmon, Mark hulme, Kenny Gordon, Jonah etc !

Totally agree. Every goal seems to be one where everyone looks at each other afterwards wondering what happened.Jonty wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:16 am Most of the goals we concede are poor- that’s the reality. 1st goal yesterday- weak challenge for the ball. Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
Perhaps that explains his less than 100% application atm. Even if he wants out and/or has already identified a suitable potential exit for himself the club could scupper that by picking up the option to extend and then offering him for sale. Unfortunately for us this tactic really only works if we stay up. So you could argue that this makes Platts continued presence in the team risky. If the rumours are true of course.jaycarter wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 10:18 am Regarding Matt Platt, Just to throw a spanner in the works, He signed a 2 year contract with a one year option so any movement away from Barrow he would have to be released from that before he could move anywhere, Barrow could in fact trigger that clause so any move could be made very difficult for him although we all appreciate we would not want to keep someone who is not happy here.

Re: Newport v Barrow match thread
I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about and obviously don't watch any other teams bar Barrow. Wrexham and Stockport can both outbid any club in EFL2 for players and have better players than any side in EFL2. Chesterfield got the Boreham Wood striker than was coveted by several EFL clubs. Ther's 3 teams for a start which would be competing right at the top of EFL2. Ther's very little difference between the leagues other than the bottom 3 or 4 in the NL who are very poor.mall wrote: ↑Sun Jan 30, 2022 8:43 amLoad a crap. The standard 'overall' in EFL2 is far better than the national league.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Sat Jan 29, 2022 7:44 pm It's not a claim, it's an opinion. If I look at the current NL now, I reckon any of the top 9 could make a decent show in EFL 2. Newport were very average and they are third!
