My thoughts go back to a comment made by Phil Brown about what a fantastically committed squad we had towards the end of last season. Think that might have been open to some debate.

These players are having their contracts torn up simply because the cost/benefit comparison says it’s not worth seeking a fee. We are essentially giving them away to free up a salary.

Far from being a fantastically committed unit this shows what a god awful state Cooper had this squad in and how close to oblivion the club was in before he had his wish to be sacked granted.

Whatever Ollie’s faults, I find this entire episode both depressing and embarrassing. Can only hope the Wild era is blessed with more honesty.

Not surpised don`t think his heart was in it at the end, Wild will have spoke to him about his plans and he probably didn`t like what they were likeable guy but we move on !

Happens all the time in football, Rooney didn’t feature in Stockport's plans so they let him leave to free up a wage. As you say, no good having a big wage being tied up for another two seasons when the manager doesn’t want him.
Best of luck to him for the future, scored a lot of goals that obviously helped us survive this nightmare of a season…not forgetting his wonder goal.

That’ll have been a token gesture of a fee. The point still stands, if a player isn’t wanted or wants away you free up a wage…a substantial wage in this case, much the same as Zanzala.

Token gesture was reportedly what Stockport paid for him in the first place. I get the point of freeing up another wage but not getting anything for one of our better players (before he signed the extension) is just bonkers IMO.

How are people (mainly on social media) struggling to grasp this? He WAS one of the best players in the league so we gave him a contract. He's since been dreadful and no longer required, so we cut our ties without wasting anymore cash on him.

Agree with others that he started the season well but I don’t think we missed him when he didn’t feature at the back end of the season.

Agree we never missed him when he went badly off the boil near the end of the season and the team imo played better without him will be remembered for his wonder goal but never took his chance when made captain that was his downfall for me

To me it looked impossible to play Banks and Rooney in the same team, and when Brown dropped Banks, Rooney became much more effective. Agree with several others that Ollie's performances had deteriorated badly, so not too sorry to see him go in spite of some good memories.

For me the best I saw Ollie Banks play was when he had to cover the centre back role away to Bradford City. Granted I only went to half a dozen away games and never missed a home game (although believe me staying at home was a real possibility most of the season).

Banksy went off the boil when the yellow cards totted up. He finished the season one card away from a 3 game ban. 14 in total and he reached that number away at Rochdale in early March. He was walking a tightrope before Brown dropped him and it showed in his performances.

Or are we using the budget more wisely? Wild said he wanted 2 players for every position, last year we barely had 1 for some positions

Not sure how that also affected his passing or his running around. A convenient excuse for him putting in little to no effort for four months.
