Paul Edwards
Paul Edwards
There is a feature on Paul Edwards on the official site as part of Black History month. A legendary player.
I have a memory of him going in goal one game at Holker Street when the keeper (Farrelly?) was injured and playing a blinder. I think it was an important game with a big crowd, a cup match perhaps? Can anyone remind me of the details?

Re: Paul Edwards
I can’t remember Paul going in goals but we did have one of our other defenders taking up that role, and I think that was a cup game…..name
tall bald headed player, one of the ones who stopped with us after the Vaughan era. Was it Ian Johnston?

We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.
Re: Paul Edwards
On 4th April 1998 goalkeeper Steve Farrelly was injured early in the top of the table match versus Runcorn at Holker Street. Barrow had no reserve keeper and the legendary centre back Eddie Johnson went between the sticks. Barrow went on to win this match 1 - 0 in front of 1,743 spectators, with Eddie brilliantly diverting a last minute Runcorn free kick around the post.

Re: Paul Edwards
It was 'Steady Eddie' Johnston, Centre Half from the promotion season of 98, signed from Knowsley. IIRC he was at the end of his career when he signed for us (37 ish?) but was brilliant for us that season helping us get promoted with Owen Brown as Manager.
Re: Paul Edwards
Yes, Eddie Johnston, a very decent defender and a big character. One of those Barrow players who I think will always be remembered as very well liked by most fans. He was also one of the four, alongside Paul Jones, Dave Higgins and Ian Foster who stayed loyal to the club during the traumatic post-v****** era.

Re: Paul Edwards
Edwards was excellent in his early days with us. In a squad that at the time had lots of grit but not a great deal of class.

Re: Paul Edwards
Excellent, committed player. I remember the game he went in goal. Didn’t he climb on the top of the St. John’s box at the end of a game?

Paul Edwards was great for us, we’ve had a few decent left backs whilst I’ve been watching but he would be right up there with the best

Re: Paul Edwards
A few of them did. Brought tears to my eyes at the time. Players with that sort of gumption and loyalty are few and far between.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 12:43 pm Excellent, committed player. I remember the game he went in goal. Re: Paul Edwards
I had that second pic stuck on a load of t-shirts, sold them at Spennymoor away on the last day of the season. Gave one to Eddie the next season, Cheltenham away.pjdaly wrote: ↑Mon Oct 24, 2022 11:48 am Yes, Eddie Johnston, a very decent defender and a big character.
