Accrington v Barrow 1960
Accrington v Barrow 1960
Just found this on a Facebook group. Difficult to recognise any players. I remember that playing strip though, with the two thin blue hoops at the top of the socks.

Love these old photos, thanks.

Great leap by the Accrington player!
Re: Accrington v Barrow 1960
So lets get a bit geeky here. This is one of two matches we played Accrington in the Autumn of 1960. Its either the 0-0 in the league taking place on Monday 26th Sept, or the 2-1 defeat they inflicted on us in the FA Cup 1st round on Saturday 5th Nov (more likely as it looks like a daytime match). We ended up 22nd that season applying for re-election & Accrington were 18th after being relegated from division 3 the season before. So it has to be one of those two games. No idea who our team was or who scored but Ron Staniforth was our manager.
Re: Accrington v Barrow 1960
According to the archives site I've been using Staniforth was still registered as a player in both those seasons so its probably him.

I was thinking that the player with his back to the camera reminded me of Ben Clark - the first impression just formed on his build and thick black hair.Hadrian wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 10:45 am 26th September team: 1 G Fullerton, 2 R Staniforth, 3 The great Tommy Cahill, 4 B Clark, 5 D McEvoy, 6 T McGlennon, 7 R Pashley, 8 J Robertson, 9 B Green, 10 G Fleming, 11 B Lowes

I also thought I recognised a Barrow fan in the crowd on the far side too

Re: Accrington v Barrow 1960
If it was the September game, I believe the Barrow goal was scored by Barry Lowes. Looking back Barry Lowes was a very useful and interesting player in those days and one that has been increasingly forgotten over time. I found his obituary (attached) and it is quite revealing. It claims that Lowes was sold by Ron Staniforth to Blackpool for £7000 before ending up at Wukkie. My inflation calculator tells me that £7000 in 1962 would be worth approaching £125,000 in 2023.

Got the games the wrong way round. Lowes scored in the FA Cup game on 5th November 1960. But he played in both games.behind the goals wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 12:37 pmSeptember game was 0-0Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 12:12 pm If it was the September game, I believe the Barrow goal was scored by Barry Lowes.
