For the 1st leg I’m pretty sure there was only a couple of hundred tickets available, I seem to remember there was a showing of the game in what was the old Barrow Public Hall. This took place either on the Monday or Tuesday evening following the game and IIRC there were hundreds in attendance. I’m sure others can verify this otherwise I may have dreamt it hence there must be a video recording somewhere ??

That's bang on. Hundreds traveled by rail without tickets hoping they could blag a few off any touts who might be there. The police presence was massive. When we arrived at Colne station 'Old Bill' was asking people to display their tickets as they left the train. Fans were coming up with all kinds of lame excuses for their lack of one. Mine was: "Oh, I'm not going to the game! I'm visiting my aunt." Plod's reply being: "Oh, there must be dozens of Barrovian aunts in Colne!" Walking up to the ground was cagey too with the police still checking for tickets. I managed to grab one in their social bar off a steward. My mate, unfortunately, didn't. However, mins before kick off, Bill Mac, the director at the time, suddenly arrived outside the turnstiles, smiling, clutching a bunch in his hand Inside the ground the atmosphere was electric, the Barrow contingent being in fine voice

I don't remember a problem getting tickets. I think I remember standing under a shelter at one side of the pitch. The roof was so low that, when Billy Gilmour scored, I am sure my hands or head hit the roof when I jumped up in delight.

Remember some garage in Colne selling tickets on the day for some reason, like quite a few Barrow fans ended up in the Colne end ok till we stood in the middle and unfolded a Barrow flag. Was that the same season we had seats in half the holker end ?

No, Colne was 89-90, the seats came later that decade to provide seating when the old stand was replaced.

I remember there were real issues getting tickets for this. I wasn't a season ticket holder at the time so thought I had no chance. I'm not sure they were even allocated enough for them, Holt House was very modest and of course led to their downfall when refused promotion due to the state of it. Imagine my delight however when I came home from work to be greeted with two tickets for the away end on the mantlepiece. My Dad worked in town so had a few contacts. I can't remember the exact detail but apparently some chap had a few and was offering them to people he knew. It definitely wasn't through any conventional route that they were obtained.

I can't remember anything of the game but I was stood on the side in our compact allocated area and it was quite crowded which was made worse when some of the folk that got in the home end were escorted to the away part. It was getting a bit lively in the crowd and a nearby policemen entered the terracing to assist with somebody in trouble just at the moment we scored. Absolute pandemonium ensued and I looked back to see a very distressed police officer desperately trying to get out of the mass of celebrating Barrovian bodies. He had obviously got knocked about a bit and the silver badge he had on his old fashioned bobbies hat was hanging off at a jaunty angle. That picture has always stayed with me.

That era was really exciting to be Barrow fan and I'm not sure it will ever be matched again for me. Promotion back to the EFL could have rivalled it but of course we were denied that due to the pandemic.

If only memories could be converted to video, Billy's diving header in the first leg at Colne is imprinted on my memory. What I can't remember, though, is any issues getting tickets like others have mentioned !

We only got 500, officially but there were loads in the Colne sections.

I was at Colne that day and remember it well. I cannot remember seeing any video of the game from any source. What I don't recall either was any showing of the game at any venue in Barrow

100% correct never happened, if so lets have a roll call off all those people(who use this forum) who attended this showing of the game just a made up story.

Thirty three years late but my apologies that’ll have been us….
One of our mates worked close to Colne and he managed to get us about a dozen tickets, we walked into their ground but as soon as the home supporters realised we were from Barrow (despite our best “undercover tactics”…) it got a little tasty which, as you describe, resulted in the police jumping over the wall and grabbing us. We fully expected to be escorted out of the ground but they actually led us around to the away end and let us in there. I quite liked their match day police

Funny how lots of things disappear from your memory but some remain as clear as the day they happened.

Emily, I'll tell you something, we might not be proving successful in finding footage of the Colne 0 Barrow 1 FA Trophy semi-final first leg from 1990, but here's something else that does your Dad great credit . . . when the list of subscribers to the Barrow AFC 1901 Club appeared a few months ago it was really good to see that Billy, along with his former team-mate Gary Messenger, are apparently both paid-up contributors to that 1901 club. Not too many players, once their contract with a club has finished, would continue to back their former club in that way. He was a popular and very effective player for Barrow more than 30 years ago and something like that shows what a genuine bloke he must be. And you can tell him that!
