Boxing Day
Re: Boxing Day
Looks like it will be a big crowd.
Hospitality sold out, main stand completely sold out, new west stand only showing about 60 seats left and I’m guessing Stockport have sold their allocation. If we reach a 5k attendance, when did that last happen for a league game?

I don’t think Paul is being harsh at all, honest but not harsh.32mile_cul-de-sac wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 12:35 pm bit harsh imo, Barrow have a hard core now of 3,000 and increasing. Rome wasn't built in a day but if you build it they will come. Merry Christmas.
Although over the years I’ve persuaded many to attend games, lots of them are now ST holders and travel with us to away games, a good few have become volunteers…but some never come back, others - I can’t prise them away from their settees watching a PL team, some actually making it the highlight of their week when they can sit there all day watching three games on the bounce.
As Nige says, you can’t defend the indefensible.
I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think the attendance will be anywhere near what some think it will be.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Re: Boxing Day
Looking on the bright side there won't be as much litter to pick on Wednesday morning then ready for the game on Friday night. Be a bit disappointed if we don't scrape 5K
10 years ago we were up the Wukkies and only took 300, and had 931 at home to them on NYD. Some journey.

Re: Boxing Day
Seeing a mention on the Wrexham thread that ifollow ban only applies to saturdays - does that mean the Stockport game will be available to watch?

Re: Boxing Day
Rare thing but I'm going to disagree with you mate, but only about the attendance. I felt that 5,000 was possible until the Crewe result. I think that and the Swindon win will put 3-400 on the gate. I feel 5,500 is possible now.spirit of 1990 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 11:03 amI don’t think Paul is being harsh at all, honest but not harsh.32mile_cul-de-sac wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 12:35 pm bit harsh imo, Barrow have a hard core now of 3,000 and increasing. Re: Boxing Day
To answer the question as to when we last had an attendance in excess of 5.000 in a league match.
Football League Div 3 ( now L1 ) August 30 1969. Barrow 3 Fulham 1. Att. 5665.
Three years and one month later we lost at home 0 - 3 to Great Harwood in the Northern Premier League. Att. 409

Wild said it perfectly in his post match on Friday “ if they don’t come now when will they” I personally think there will be over 5k

Exactly, well said - it does indeed take time.

Re: Boxing Day
The great Johnny Haynes graced Holker Street that day . . . former captain of England, someone about whom no less a figure than Pele apparently once said "I've never seen a better passer of the ball". That's quite some tribute coming from a man who was at the epicentre of the extraordinary ball-playing Brazil team of 1970.
It didn't work out for the great Haynes that day however as Tony Morrin was star of the show . . . the late Tony Morrin, a decent player who unfortunately came to Barrow at the wrong time when we were at our worst and in rapid decline (despite the win over Fulham).

Re: Boxing Day
Main stand sold out.
West Terrace stand, 13 left.
Unable to guesstimate how many 'ground' or terrace tickets sold.
Tickets came off sale at Stockport very suddenly on Friday when there appeared to be around 180 left on the matrix.
Come what may, a damn good attendance in the making.

People are fickle. We had reasonable gates in the league .32mile_cul-de-sac wrote: ↑Sun Dec 24, 2023 10:19 amGetting people in for a big game is not the problem, Getting them in on a regular basis takes time and we are heading in the right direction. Once we got expelled we went from several thousands to few hundreds at best.
I will be quite honest I liked the space !

Re: Boxing Day
Brilliant post & I bet we've all come across that armchair fan who asks us who we support & when you tell them Barrow (or in my case County) they reply 'yeah but which premier league team do you follow?'pjdaly wrote: ↑Sat Dec 23, 2023 11:54 am I don't know how many people there are in Barrow who would be described as football fans and football followers, but I'll hazard a wild guess at about 20,000 (partly based on how many came out of the woodwork many years ago to turn up for matches such as the Southampton and Leicester FA Cup ties). These are different times I know, so 20,000 is a debatable figure. Anyhow, every one of those 20,000 or so should be itching to get into Holker Street on Boxing Day, even though they can't all be accommodated. It means that it certainly should be "doors closed, full house" on the 26th.
That probably won't be the case (though I hope I am wrong) and there'll still be hordes who won't give their home club a thought and will only be interested in Man Utd, Liverpool et al on the box. I would say to such people you might be able to appreciate what good football is but you haven't a clue about football spirit. Your home-town team has a club and a team at this moment in time that is second to absolutely none in terms of professional commitment, togetherness, and a will to succeed. But hey, crack open another tinnie, slouch back in your armchairs, tune in to the big boys on the TV and carry on being the personification of shallowness within the human race.
As for Boxing day, I'll be more than happy with a point. Your place seems to be a bit of bogey ground for us, you're flying at the moment, unbeaten at home & a different proposition to earlier in the season when we met at E.P. We're missing some key players at the moment & January can't come soon enough so we can get some fresh bodies in but we've had 2 good results in our last couple of games so who knows we might just nick a win.
Regardless of the result hope it's a good game & the people of Barrow turn out to support a team on the up. Merry Xmas Barrovians.
