Bit sad to see some of the comments now that he's left. Lets not forget when he took over we'd just almost been relegated and very nearly appointed Phil Brown as permanent manager. He turned the team around, added his own players and got us competitive and enjoying games again after two pretty awful years. Yes some of his recruitment was short and sometimes perhaps he seemed a bit reluctant or unable to change things but I'd say he did well for us. The drop off particularly at the end of last season was a concern but he looked shocked himself and flustered in that Bradford home game and I just think the pressure got to him and some of the players, it's not easy to get over the line and takes a certain mentality and mindset. Look how many other teams 'bottled it' at the end.
The football at time perhaps wasn't the best but I also remember some games where we did play good stuff, Doncaster and Bradford at home in his first year in particular, and he found a way of getting results against undoubtedly some teams with far bigger budgets than ourselves.

Never understood the comparisons with Ian Evatt as in that league we were quite a big club whereas in the EFL we're not.

We'll probably never know the full circumstances or reasons why but wish him well. And good luck to Stephen Clemence now in this new era.
Good post that Scotty 👍

Wild spoke to the Media like we didn't have the right to be where we were, thus stating he and his players were over-achieving.

If this mentality got to the players, they probably bottled it because they saw the dizzy heights and got vertigo, so to speak.

I believe if he had the 'us against the world' fighting attitude (the way Bayliss and Evatt spoke to the Media and probably their players) I think we would have got over the line and been in the play-offs comfortably.

Wild did well overall, but mentality plays a massive part in any achievement and I think this is why we fell short.

I know what you’re saying Scott, but i’ve seen jobs go for well into 6 figures based on a LinkedIn intro. Head-hunters will use LinkedIn as one of a number of tools to find candidates.
The idea that football managers are identified simply by old school methods is fast disappearing.

Football managers are like newsprint. If you don’t read them today, tomorrow they’ll be chip paper.

PW got a fair amount of good press over his two year period with us but that was as much about the club and the town as it was about him.

I’ve never been as convinced as some that his profile within the game has been that high. If he’s waiting for a call based purely on perception then he might be waiting a while. Adam Temple you might suggest certainly sees it that way.

He is going to find it hard in his next job as he is appearing like the nearly man and that will play on his mind.
Evatt looks like he has peaked with nearly 50% of Bolton fans wanting rid of him.
Our new Manager will be given time well we can look after 12 games.
Would like to know what's happening to the likes of Ben Whitfield etc but that will be apparent when the friendlys come along.

I don’t anyone is slagging off PW. Irrespective of how it ended, I’m very thankful we had him for as long as we did.

I think it’s simply that we tend to find out more about the character and personality of the managers from their manner of leaving. Was the same with Evatt and Cooper. It enhances your perspective of them.

Not sure that Evatt has peaked. Possibly just Bolton has found its current level.

No logic behind that statement at all. However, some Bolton fans, like some fans of all clubs expect continuous progress. A promotion from EFL 2 and a 3rd place in EFL 1 is obviously not good enough for some. After all the seasons of mediocrity they had before Evatt arrived you would think they would know better.

Rule no 1: no manager is bigger than the club in the eyes of its supporters.

It’s been mentioned before that Evatt managed to unload the incumbent DoF when he went to Bolton. Times were different. Evatt led them out of very stormy waters with a restricted budget.

Now they have their swagger back. They’ve been reinvesting in directorships like the behemoth they once were. Although it’s only one promotion, they now think collectively like the club they were. Evatt’s role is being continually re-evaluated and at some point the management model will change and unless Evatt’s approach clearly looks like it will get them into the Championship his time will come to an end and quickly. This is no sleight on Evatt’s abilities and more to do with what drives and influences football clubs.

Dare I say that this may have been a factor in the departure of PW. We know that in the first couple of years back in the EFL, the club and the Board struggled with its identity and this probably led us to make some poor managerial choices. We look a bit of a different beast now and you can see the strategy embedded in the processes. We have a direction and managers must align with that.

Well we will see ,but I think they thought he was the saviour but since when did logic and football go together.

It's quite interesting reading their forum really he seems to be a tad curt.

Agreed. One of the best posts I ever saw on here was a brilliant assessment of Phil Brown's tenure and departure.
