Despite injuries to key personnel we are doing rather well but alarmingly, our top scorer is a centre back and the key striker debate is now into it’s third season. There have been mutterings here and there that we are in the market for a hitman to come in and lead the line with some much-needed presence. But even if we can find this unicorn-esque striker he literally won’t be up-to-speed for some time so for now we go with what we’ve got and here’s how I see them.

1. E Acquah – great lad, young, good all-round finisher but not a 90 minute player, can be devastating as an impact substitute.
Verdict: Give run out later on if chasing a game and one to keep.

2. A Dallas – great lad, young, fiery, plenty of ability and has a point to prove to everyone not least to parent club Barnsley.
Verdict: Starts every game when fit, look to permanent signing.

3. G Garner – great lad, has skill and can finish but lacks physicality and sits deep where he needs to be more ‘fox in the box’ to succeed.
Verdict: Try in supporting role behind Dallas, instruct to get stuck in more, allow contract to run down.

4. D Telford – great lad, proven track record but has not been successful at Barrow. Needs to move to a higher/lower level to re-ignite his career and fulfil his potential. Verdict: Move on ASAP.

5. A Newguy – great lad, needs to hit 20+ goals before May or will be hounded out without mercy.
Verdict: Has proved to be highly elusive.

Title should have been Top Gun (part 2.75) Surely!
I still think we might get away with a Maverick eventually although one of our current shooters could become a Phoenix then there would be Payback and they would soon become a Fanboy, having us all wailing like a Coyote thus avoiding the Hangman. But they need to start scoring like a Cyclone or they will face the January Hammer, and then we could go foreign with Fritz or even explore the university leagues looking at maybe Harvard and Yale. Ultimately though someone’s Goose will be cooked If we do have a new target man in our sights. Ten four from me.

Dallas might well be the answer and I agree he deserves a start at some point but on what (little) we’ve seen so far you certainly couldn’t be saying right now he should be starting every game

This constant criticism of our strikers and now Stanway is well OTT I just looked at the league table and couldn't believe Barrow are 3rd with so many poor players, should Feeley be added to the list also.

Why do we need to be so reliant on A single goal scorer, it’s far better to have multiple scorers surely, look at all the major successful clubs may have an amazing CF but there goals come from all over the pitch, and in EFL2 it is definitely not alien to have a CB that scores from set plays, surely that is a good thing and something we should be proud of or certainly happy about. The fact that we haven’t got a goal machine CF doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things as long as we are getting goals from other areas, taking 3 points and we are joint top of the league, so…

'Twas ever thus. I've just spotted this extract from the Sports Postbag in the Mail (1948, I think) in which the correspondent bemoans the fact we are not playing all 5 forwards; that crosses are coming in with only 1 in the box and the formation is wrong:

Verdict: Starts every game when fit, look to permanent signing. Not seen enough of him to form an opinion, needs to get in the side to show us what he can do.

3. G Garner – great lad, has skill and can finish but lacks physicality and sits deep where he needs to be more ‘fox in the box’ to succeed.
Verdict: Try in supporting role behind Dallas, instruct to get stuck in more, allow contract to run down. Jury out on Garner for me, shows glimpses of class but those glimpses need to be more often.

4. D Telford – great lad, proven track record but has not been successful at Barrow. Needs to move to a higher/lower level to re-ignite his career and fulfil his potential. Verdict: Move on ASAP. Agree

5. A Newguy – great lad, needs to hit 20+ goals before May or will be hounded out without mercy.
Verdict: Has proved to be highly elusive. Barrow are not in a position to shell out big money for such striker even IF we could find one. All clubs would like to find this striker.
