Re: Carlisle game
That's because we're signing player's based on stats , someone said on Sky the other night that a lot of team's sign player's before they've actually got an insight into who they are !

Does Wood go to watch the players he has in mind or just buy on stats or his agent mates trying to do an offload?

Re: Carlisle game
Andy Whing was asked about recruitment by Adam Johnson during his first couple of weeks in the job. Whing said he was part of the recruitment team and was blown away with the information gathered by the team. He also said that everyone in the recruitment team including himself have to agree when signing players. Stats is just part of the process as I believe Joe Harvey spends many hours travelling to watch games and players. Also If one member of the recruitment team does not want the player they don’t pursue them. Once they all agree I guess the financial side of the deal is managed by wood which makes perfect sense given his background in football agentsbluessupporter wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 10:08 am

Folk need to remember we are not shopping top end high street stores when looking for players given our financial position it’s more like Poundland and Aldi where your looking for that bargain that will still do a job for you

Re: Carlisle game
The use of player analysis stats is reducing the amount of scouting being done. The scouting is being done for you through the data being captured on players over a larger spread of games. This makes scouting players far reaching and more cost effective for clubs. They all do it.bluessupporter wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 10:08 amDoes Wood go to watch the players he has in mind or just buy on stats or his agent mates trying to do an offload?

Re: Carlisle game
I’d like to see Cameron’s stats then because he was struggling to get in a poor rock bottom St Johnstone team that were shipping goals left right and centre, similarly last season with notts county too…
Recruitment over the last year or so has been dreadful and that can’t all be put down to Clemence. The whole club needs to look at itself there and improve. The money spent or wasted on the likes of Mahoney, Garner, Telford etc. is huge and they were hardly Poundland buys.

Re: Carlisle gam
Theres no guarantees it will work for any player, whether they are highlighted to the club through data analysis or through someone sat in a stand. Some players it just doesn't work out, even at the highest levels. There could be all sorts of reasons. Look at Dom Telford's record, he was in the EFL team of the season at Newport and the league’s top scorer. Everything you want to see when bringing in a goalscorer he ticked the boxes.Scott5 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 10:32 am I’d like to see Cameron’s stats then because he was struggling to get in a poor rock bottom St Johnstone team that were shipping goals left right and centre, similarly last season with notts county too…

Telford then went Crawley what about his record there ?,Jonty wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 11:05 amTheres no guarantees it will work for any player, whether they are highlighted to the club through data analysis or through someone sat in a stand. Garner his goalscoring record was woeful, Pressley again woeful, Dallas again didn't score in the national league!, Mahoney he did have a decent record at Gillingham, but the forwards recruitment has generally been terrible, ok someone will say quigley BUT he was a one off !
We knew all along with Whitfield going it was only leaving Spence and if he had a bad season or got injured we were going to be in trouble!
The thought process will have been Mahoney to replace Whitfield stats good but workrate abysmal! Which is a basic in league 2 requirement, but that left us still without a goalscorer up front hence where we are now not discounting terrible goals conceded, we never signed a decent right back which we have missed for a few seasons not picking on Newby because he's being told to play wingback when he's not physical enough to play this position!, Whing is in a bad position here because does he make a lot of changes or leave it he's caught between a rock and a hard place, it's down to the professional attitude of the players now !
Re: Carlisle game
Telford on paper looked a good signing but if you’re not going to play to a players strengths you’ll never get the best of them. I always thought he needed a bigger player alongside him and to be part of a front two which we’ve rarely ever played for sone time now. So on that basis whatever his stats were, did he fit into the way we played then no and never would have I don’t think. His season at Newport was the exception rather than the norm. At Crawley a decent year but nothing special and they offloaded him and won promotion…
Mahoney you only have to look at the decline in his career to know there’s an issue there, and read a handful of comments from Gillingham fans about his work rate or lack of…
Unproven players and younger ones there is always a risk as with anyone to a point, that it won’t work out but how many recent signings of ours HAVE worked out? Jackson aside I can’t think of anyone we’ve brought in over the last year who has actually improved us. In most areas we’ve gone backwards particularly upfront. Kirk, Kouyate, Pressley, Mahoney, Dallas…

Re: Carlisle game
Need at least a point on Thursday against a Carlisle side unbeaten in last 2 games with no goals conceded and full of confidence, our last 2 games very poor and now the Manager saying he needs to pick players he can trust never heard that before from a Barrow Manager, Whing should know what formation suits the players best by now.

Re: Carlisle game
They won't be a better time to play Carlisle they needed wins from the last couple of games and were not playing top sides. Gillingham were fairly abysmal at Barrow.
They signed lots of players in the window but you can't play them all. If we lose on Thursday it would be a blow but certainly not a fatal one for us. Carlisle need to be picking up more than a point a game to overtake us even if we don't get any more points.

Re: Carlisle game
I’m not sure it’s down to the manager not knowing which formation suits , it’s down to which players actually give a shit. They give up yesterday after the second. And some of them have been awful for weeks and months.behind the goals wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:08 pm Need at least a point on Thursday against a Carlisle side unbeaten in last 2 games with no goals conceded and full of confidence, our last 2 games very poor and now the Manager saying he needs to pick players he can trust never heard that before from a Barrow Manager, Whing should know what formation suits the players best by now.
Listen to Canavans interviews he’s done this season , he says it all about attitude within the squad.

Re: Carlisle game
That’s one way of looking at it. The other way of course would be to say that Carlisle haven’t won either of their last two games, both played at home, both against sides that are not in the top ten and did not score in either. You are obviously a cup half empty bloke!behind the goals wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 12:08 pm Need at least a point on Thursday against a Carlisle side unbeaten in last 2 games with no goals conceded and full of confidence, our last 2 games very poor and now the Manager saying he needs to pick players he can trust never heard that before from a Barrow Manager, Whing should know what formation suits the players best by now.
Truth is that you can’t really judge the prospects for next Thursday based on the current form of either team.
Re: Carlisle game
Don't underestimate the threat of Carlisle. Listened to their game yesterday and it sounds like they did everything but score. I would argue they are showing signs of a great escape act and it just needs that first win to kick start a recovery. Considering we've just shipped 6 in the last two games and our never ending inconsistency up front. They will see this as a massive opportunity to get points and we have a bad habit of choking in these games. Hands down biggest game of the season and we absolutely must be on top of our game.Bingo wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 1:15 pm They won't be a better time to play Carlisle they needed wins from the last couple of games and were not playing top sides. I’ll be cup half empty, but that is from what I’ve seen of my own team, If we don't come out showing aggression in every tackle, chasing every second ball and and every player taking responsibility to do their job we will get beat and the table starts looking a lot different, especially with Notts away the following Tuesday night.
The crowd also has a massive part to play, you know their fans are going to be very loud and well up for it, so lets make sure we are equally backing the lads and shouting for absolutely everything.

Re: Carlisle game
And everyone blamed Clemence but if the players can`t be arsed then Whing won`t last long with this squad, I`ve already mentioned it but Whing doesn`t trust some players to put the work in, thankfully we might just have enough to stay up but a big clear out is needed for next season.BarrowLad71 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2025 1:49 pmI’m not sure it’s down to the manager not knowing which formation suits , it’s down to which players actually give a shit. Re: Carlisle game
It only seems to happen away, we've won 3 out of 4 since Whing arrived and We should have drawn with Doncaster.
I honestly think Whing and the team are overthinking this away stat,
The win will come, all we get is the mantra off whing and players is it's not good enough, we KNOW but let's stop going on about how poor it's been and just get on with it !
