Goalkeeper situation.
Re: Goalkeeper situation.
Stanway class last night apart from the error.
Be good if he can take the number 1 jersey next year with an experienced keeper as back up.

Stanway looks good on the whole, he will make mistakes, that's part and parcel of him maturing into a top keeper. We will have to put up with mistakes simple as.

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
If Stanway can continue to improve at his current rate then I think he would be seriously knocking on Farmans door by the end of next season. If he improves beyond that then we will be looking for another keeper as the infamous “cycle” kicks in.
But we’d be looking for another keeper probably in 12 months time anyway given Farman’s age. So sticking with Wyl is probably not seen as being that much of a risk. And in truth probably isn’t.

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
I'd be surprised if Farman is here next season;- he's been a good player for us, but it's Stanway's time now - yes he made an error for the goal, but the rest of the game he showed how good a player he is and will become. He's already better at covering his near post than Farman is....
I wouldn't be against Farman staying as a number 2, but think he'll prefer going elsewhere as a number 1 - possibly somewhere like Rochdale or Carlisle (he'd probably get a 2 year deal in the NL)

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
We have consistently missed unbelievable chances all season Smith in his short time here has missed several and could have had a hat-trick v Salford yet is only 1 goal behind our leading goalscorers, Stanway has mainly done well when called on but to say he might be ready this time next season is unbelievable he us ready now, it's not our goalkeeper that needs to improve it's the other end of the pitch.

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
That's a great point, "mistakes" at the top end of the pitch (misplaced passes, bad touches, missing the target), often go with little comment, but ones at the back do, due to them leading to goals, its just the way things are.
I think the experience Stanway will gain getting a run of games will be fantastic for him, and the club. Mistakes are there in all keepers, been a number of mentions of Farman's mistakes in other threads, and you still see the world class keepers making them at the highest level. I think he will turn out to be a very good goalkeeper for us, and having the experience of Farman to learn from this season, and an experienced no.2 next season would be invaluable for his development.

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
I full expect Stanway to be no1 next season. i like how hes more of a front foot keeper than Farman, there's no hesitation when coming for balls. hes either coming or hes not, its one of Farmans main faults and must be awful for the defenders to play in front of
Re: Goalkeeper situation.
Stanway flapped at that cross on Tuesday night and it cost us the match. Harsh but true. Nevertheless, this has to be countered by the fact that he made three or four excellent saves and, but for that error, had a great game. You have to feel for keepers as their errors often lead directly to goals whereas any other player on the pitch might get away with a mistake. We have to forgive a bit more for a keeper, though obviously within reason.
Like others of a certain age I revere the memory of the great Fred Else, a supreme goalkeeper and a supreme professional example to his team-mates. Yet I recall in our first season in the old 3rd Division in 1967-68 he did something very similar to young Stanway and flapped at a corner at the Steelworks End, leading to a last minute winner for Gillingham. Yes, even Fred made an error! I recall remonstrating with one of the Gillingham players after the match. When I say "remonstrating" I mean telling him his team had been lucky to win! I was about 10 years old and about two-and-a-half feet tall. The Gills player could have squashed me under his boot but fortunately he was forgiving and just sort of smiled at this cheeky little kid. I guess we need to be forgiving of the odd goalkeeping error because the very nature of the goalkeeping position is unforgiving. So Stanway gets the nod from me for a prolonged opportunity - - - as long as he doesn't do it again (well, not too often anyway . . .)

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
All players make mistakes, but as a goalie one mistake can have very important consequences, as we clearly saw on Tuesday.
It was arguably at worst a schoolboy flap, and obviously an equaliser for them.
Apart from that Stanway was good.
Fast off his line, brave, and he made some important athletic stops.
Also his distribution can be good, particularly with speedy low-ish kicks, which can be flicked on with pace on them, rather than the booming punts that very often come straight back.
Farman has been very good for us because he is capable of making exceptional reaction saves, but he hasn't dominated his box enough with catches, punches and clearances to make him exceptional at this level.
For next season I'm not sure Stanway has the full package yet, and I think a steady experienced keeper is needed to vie with him for the starting position.

I was working in Blackburn in 1968 and I mentioned to a workmate that Fred Else was doing well for us. He was a bit surprised and said: "We used to call him Fumbly Fred".pjdaly wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 10:40 am

Jim. Your post triggered a childhood memory along those same lines. That Fred Else had a reputation for fumbling and even that this might have been a reason why he never had an international career.Jim wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 12:27 pmI was working in Blackburn in 1968 and I mentioned to a workmate that Fred Else was doing well for us. It was never much apparent as far as I can remember. He saved us far more points than he cost us.

Re: Goalkeeper situation.
Surely it all comes down to cost. We have to rely on developing our younger players and if all goes well sell them on. That’s the type of club we are because we haven’t got the resources some other League Two clubs have. So bearing that in mind Stanway is the obvious first choice keeper for next season.
It always amuses me reading this forum when people say we need an experienced 20 goal a season striker. Everyone does but we can’t afford one so have to shop accordingly.

So with that in mind we’re always likely because finances dictate to get a player that can be developed rather than a finished article.FanzoneFan wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 1:45 pm Surely it all comes down to cost.
