Absolutely he did. Jackson was a revelation at right wing back in the last third of the season when we had a good run. It's the left wing back position that we are struggling with IMO. Newby just isn't strong enough to play there. We definitely need strengthing in that position. I still find it baffling Newby was given another two year contract.

Big Tom will help there now i think.
Whatever people's opinions are of Elliott, every manager has trusted him in that role, so they must see something in him I guess

That would be a waste of his talent, play him as a forward don't know why people think this 3 at the back is good, yes it's solid but as an attacking spectacle it very rarely works and you have to move the ball quickly, we were spoilt with our midfield over the last few years, for it to work it's going to take time!

As the post above says and I’ll add my thoughts , if we’ve signed Barky to play wing back then we need a long look at ourselves. He’s an attacking winger let’s get him up the pitch and doing what he does best. Only played a short while yesterday and was putting on a show

He’s never a wingback, not on his mother’s side even. Too weak, lightweight and gets bullied and I saw him turn his back in the highlights yesterday.
To be fair to him he’s an attacking player I think he actually began as a striker first time around with us, but he’s not a league 2 player for me, squad player at best. We need a good left wing back and or a right and move Jackson over. Patrick Brough back would’ve been ideal he was available but went to Tranmere.

I’m sure Whing has someone in mind as with the system he seems to want to play, we are dependant on the widemen defending and getting crosses in.

I watched the club one. He came out with a great line, talking about how he’d had a few sleepless nights
this week because you never really know if your team is up to scratch until you play your first game. Really good honest interview.

Very harsh. There was one instance in the first half when Newby tracked back thirty yards and made a great tackle near the corner flag to stop a cross going in. Thought he did a reasonable defensive job on Saturday. Most of their threat in first half was down our right not left. Thought it was his forward play that was more lacking than his defensive play on Saturday.
Didn’t think he stood out as having a poor game on Saturday.
Room for improvement certainly but I’m a bit non-pluses by this scapegoating of Newby.

In order to have seven subs after the window shuts you must have players that have come through the clubs academy. Given we don’t have an academy it’d hardly going to change any time soon

Since we have had a forum, there has always been one. Simon Shaw was the first that I remember, then there was Phil "can't head the ball" Bolland.

As I mentioned in a previous thread, one reason Newby is selected may be that he was second only to Jackson for assists last season.

I heard those words too. It may have been honest but I found it pretty worrying that a manager just before the first game of the season is having doubts about whether his team selection is going to be up to it or not. It actually undermined my confidence in him and I think it would have been better if had kept those thoughts to himself.

I think Newby is a good player no way is he a tackler but played right he is a attribute.
I remember players like Dave Storf and Roy McCarthey both like Newby when they pushed forward upset defenders.
Newby is a provider for a target man in the style of Quigley we have not had once since Quigley.

I think Andy Whing is still learning the trade and wears his heart on his sleeve,maybe should have expressed his worries after the game
He will learn.
I just wish we had scouts to look at lower team and unearth players with potential.
