Colchester Utd v Barrow match thread
Re: Colchester Utd v Barrow match thread
Yes I stand in the popular side aswell and I sometimes get a bit embarrassed when I'm shouting and getting carried away, because nobody else does.

Fair point; and then in recent times decisions made have stopped it being as noisy on the HSE at it has been at times since our return to the EFL. Whereas to be fair you get the odd Barrow, Barrow chant from the seats which used to be extremely rarebluessupporter wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 11:36 amListening on the radio you can always hear the Barrow chants at away matches but rarely at home ones. Not been the same since the demise of the popular side choir, which used to get more areas of the ground chanting as well.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 11:21 am
In contrast to the majority of away days. At least the ones I’ve been to. More noise, more passion. Perhaps because of less expectation. Expect less, then achieving something becomes more satisfying. Irrespective of the performance.
Not sure what the answer is mind bar giving everyone 5 free pints at home games

And we were a small fish in a big pool in the national league but Ian Evatt wouldn’t allow that kind of mentality and hence we did well. We seem to have slipped back to that kind of victim little old Barrow we have to borrow our balls we are so poor mentality that leads down one path relegationBarrow afc 2018 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 9:24 am Agree with small fish in big pond, our main aim every season is to survive.
In that sense the way we set up is not to get beat hence many one goal in it games.
Excitement is generated by attacking hence the reason league two is so boring.
I’m afraid unless we get much needed investment we can all expect much of the same having said that a boring One nil to the Barrow and survival will do for me.![]()
We couldn’t have done what Grimsby did last night even with the same line up we set up so negatively then end up losing anyway. It’s a straightforward game

If you go out thinking you can't win then you wont.
Need to drop the " little old Barrow" and have a go at teams rather than ( in particular away from home) play damage limitation football.
We have the players to cause damage so use them properly.

Look at Leicester for example, nobody thought in a million years they would win the premier league and they didn't have big budget players, high profile names etc etc.. they won cos they wanted to, they had desire and worked hard together as a group.
So yeh, i totally agree..

The mantra “little old Barrow” has served us well since we got back in the league
To just survive in league two is a massive achievement for us. We don’t have the off field infrastructure or finances to compete in the league above so until that much needed investor comes along to just compete and survive in EFL 2 as “ little old Barrow” is fine by me

Leicester played a counter-attacking game based on Vardy's pace that season not gung ho attacking football.olbarrafancumbak wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 4:46 pmLook at Leicester for example, nobody thought in a million years they would win the premier league and they didn't have big budget players, high profile names etc etc.. they won cos they wanted to, they had desire and worked hard together as a group.

That's exactly the togetherness that the players in the 1990 FA Trophy Final had. They wanted to do it for themselves and for each other. Positive Mental Attitude. You can't beat it - it wins matches.olbarrafancumbak wrote: ↑Thu Aug 28, 2025 4:46 pm

I think the “little Barrow” tag started, not on the pitch, but when dealing with an unexpected promotion after 48 years in the non league wilderness, throw in a pandemic for added measure. We were just not prepared for it. Up to this point, surviving in the National League was a major achievement, never mind having any realistic chance of actually winning it!
We’ve done well given all the challenges we have faced since promotion. The club and match day is unrecognisable to what it was 10 years ago. I do think we have reached a point where to continue progress as a club, not just to survive, (there has to be a greater aim than to just survive) is very much dependent on additional investment getting on board.

Re: Colchester Utd v Barrow match thread
The rather silly term 'little old Barrow' comes from the David Dunn era and was possibly coined by Dunn himself who was happily working in a timber yard before fate came a'knocking. Since then it has been widely promoted by Forum member Bingo in most of his posts and for reasons best known to himself. Hardly an appropriate description for the only ELF club in the vast county of Cumbria l would of thought.

The term “little old Barrow” may be seen as recent but the sentiment goes back many decades.
It encapsulates not just the team but the town itself, its location and people’s perception of its remoteness. Possibly has a class based whiff about it too.
Interestingly, my recollection from the old league days was that it was a term used by the club itself to help define its character and personality. A flag to rally round.

I agree. A term used with a sense of irony by locals against the world: You may think that, Matey Boy; we know better.
A similar term is the 'town at the end of a cul-de-sac', a phrase coined in the 1970s by Mike Harding, once a very funny, working-class comedian and knowledgeable folk singer before he took his riches to a cottage in rural Tykeland and adopted Guardianista attitudes.
Such phrases may induce horror among the perpetually-offended and the grumblies who continually seek negativity. In reality, they are shields that actually poke fun at those who use them to sneer at us, our home area and its perceived isolation (which isn't really). We do know better.
Others use them at their peril. Never under-estimate Furness, Barrow or The Soccer!
