A Right Bunch Of Charlies

This Charlie McCann signing set me thinking . . . how many Charlies have played for us?

Just for fun – and without cheating by checking the many AFC books in my possession – I set myself the task of trying to recall the other Charlies that have played for us. I can only think of two but there must be others. The ones that spring to mind are Charlie Cooper (a full-back from the late 1960's) and Charlie Butler (played up front for us in the early 1990's).

Any other offers? (And 'Charles' is acceptable . . . not that you get many 'Charles' as footballers names, unless you are talking surnames, John Charles etc etc)

Looking at an internet source A-Z listing Barrow players (possibly incomplete), there is only one listed before 2000 - Charlie Thompson, a South African, defender, born 1909. This suggests that it is only recently that we have started signing Charlies

Wintergreen and Jim . . . Charlie Farley is a good mention, the only trouble being that my research shows he was actually called Ron (and indeed Albert 'Piggy' Malone was also called Ron funnily enough). So strictly speaking, they might have both played for Barrow but in each case we can only accept the name 'Ron'. I have to be honest though and say that whether we call them Charlie, Ron, Albert, Ron, Piggy, or Ron I can't recall Farley or Malone at all in a Barrow first eleven. You've got me worried now that my memory might not be what it once was.

As for current players and those of recent years I can't remember most of their names, or more correctly, I can't pronounce most of their names . . . it was much simpler when I were but a lad and they were all called Thompson or Smith.

Blue Bayou . . . yes, Charlie Gisbourne played for us a number of times in the mid-70's at left full-back. Now you mention him I remember him well even though I'd forgotten all about him.

Now that I've looked at my books there really are not many Charlies who have played for us and, of those that have, the majority seem to have played for us in the first half of the last century.

Did we not have a Charlie, can’t remember his surname in the (this is a bit embarrassing) late 80s or late 90s? Came as quite a biggish signing singing in non league football at the time. I think he was from the NE - which probably suggests the late 80s under Ray Wilkie.

Butler….Charlie Butler. No idea how that came to me literally two minutes after my original post
