In the days of Bill McCullough there was an assumption that local lads would play for very little in the way of cash with pride in the shirt and keeping their home town club going being the principal motivation. Hired out of town superstars would be on more money which of course created something of a schism in the squad not helped by them not training together of course. I also vaguely remember a lad from Millom coming in from the local leagues to help out, scoring a hat-trick and never being contacted by the club again thereafter.

Ray Wikie's teams seemed to have a far more harmonious mix of travelling men and locals somehow; perhaps the difference being the characteristics between people from the North East area and people from the Greater Manchester area.

In the days of Bill McCullough that you mentioned we had a "sponge man/coach " by the Name of Stan Casey who served us for a number of years. Vey sad to read this week that he recently passed away. He was also a force for good with in the local amateur game at a number of clubs. RIP Stan.

Not sure but, I think Stan was at the club in the days of Maurice Whittle, (ex Everton) winger.

I found the following
Stan Casey first got involved with Barrow AFC after being invited to the club by the late Max Rattray and Bill McCullough, and in 1975 he worked as a sports therapist and physio for manager Brian Arrowsmith.

He later became assistant manager to Mick Taylor at Holker Street, a position he held from 1979-83. In fact Casey was to have a say at AFC on a further two occasions, joining Maurice Whittle and then former Liverpool star David Johnston in the dug-out. the following after doing a seatch

As per my post on Facebook, Stan was a lovely bloke. I remember him always with a smile and a kind word. Utterly approachable and clearly devoted to the club.

He was one of those massively important cogs that were only ever really partly visible, never in the forefront but helped kept the club alive as we emerged from that horrible 1970s decade of doom and disaster. A bloke that would do just about any job without a fuss and without much expectation of personal fame or gain.

Whatever success we have achieved since has been built on the contributions of people such as Stan. His passing should be lamented. RIP Stan and thanks.

Totally agree SB, Stan had great connections with the local scene, spent many a half hour on his treatment table in Raleigh St with my dodgy knees.

Always a good craic, remember him as a Rigger in the yard he always had time to talk footy.

As you rightly say without these type of guys keeping things going god knows where we would be. RIP Stan one of our own.

Always excellent to see Wyll and Elliott doing well for the team. I don't think we've had a proper local hero since Wayne Curtis.
Popular side since '03.

Aye sad to hear the news regarding Stan, he was a class act and a true gentleman. I went a few times in my late teens when I suffered an impact injury he wouldn’t take any money off me despite my insistence and helped sort out my injury in double quick time and offered great advise.

Sad news! Was a decent player himself. Played for Barrow Celtic alongside Johnny Maxfield in centre back position and despite their size were a tough pair! In simple words Stan was Hard as nails on the pitch. Went to his physio plenty of times in Raleigh st. Another good one gone!🙁

Sorry to learn about Stan Casey having passed over. Although I never personally knew him I do of course remember him and his connections to the club and some of those tributes above provide a wonderful commendation of him as a human being.
