I’m one of the first to moan (rightly or wrongly) about how poor we have been recently!

I’m not a football manager but have spent a lifetime watching footie.

Today was exactly the way I would have hoped things would have gone.

Passion in abundance, what we lacked in skill we matched in energy. What a difference.

Adam has just said that he lost it when we scored - I actually played it back for my other half to listen to at the time. Brilliant, passionate commentary as usual. Massive win. I was at Shrewsbury on Tuesday and I really feared for our future (I am normally an optimist), so the swift appointment of Dino and the immediate improvement has really made my weekend. We must avoid our usual disappointment against Harrogate. We will do L2 a favour if we beat them.

The supporters gathered momentum and got right behind the team loud and proud the players seemed to respond and we got a deserved winner. Wyll Stanway was resolute when called upon.
Need to back that up with a result against Harrogate and the table should be looking a little better

Barrow dug in for a precious, battling, three points under new manager Dino Maamria, an excellent defensive performance against a dangerous Colchester attacking force paved the way for a late revival and goal. Just as impressive was how we contained the visitors for the final 10 minutes, gaining possession rather than defending deeply. Wyll Stanway was excellent and we rode our luck on a couple of occasions but then we have often come out the wrong side of luck on our recent losing run! We now need to carry that confidence on to our 6-pointer against Harrogate on Tuesday evening, the type of fixture which has so often caused us problems.

We started brightly and spent much of the opening 15 minutes in Colchester’s half without creating a clear-cut chance on goal. Colchester threatened on the break, and would mount more attacks as the half progressed.

Lisbie looked especially dangerous, winning their first corner 10 minutes in. A couple of minutes later we won our first corner following good work by Jackson and Harper. Twenty minutes in, Lisbie won another corner forcing a Stanway save from a Goodwin header, followed by an Akachukwu shot being cleared.

Tovide fouled Barkhuizen on the half hour for the game’s first yellow card and the No.9 rode his luck when he fouled Rose minutes later

In the 33rd minute, Jackson unleashed a shot from the edge of the area which went just wide of the right post, our best chance of the first half.

0-0 at half time and the crowd wondered what Dino’s team talk would produce.

Three minutes into the second half, Canavan was booked for a foul on Tovide, when the Barrow crowd thought the No.9, already on a yellow, had dived. Fortunately, the free kick was cleared

Three minutes later, a foul at the other end by Vincent-Young on the ever-industrious Rose gave us a McCann free kick which was easily saved by Macey.

Colchester started a period of dominance, with more breaks by Lisbie and Stanway having to punch away a 57th minute Back cross, after which Tovide shot wide from close range when he should have scored. This scare was followed by another Colchester attack in the 63rd minute which saw Tovide put the ball into Barrow’s net, but it was ruled out for offside. Two minutes later, Stanway punched away a Read corner

It seemed only a matter of time before we would concede. Dino made a change in the 67th minute, Mahoney coming on for Earing. Thompson was then booked for a foul on Goodwin on the half way line and then McCann brought down Akachukwa near the edge of Barrow’s penalty area. All eyes were on Payne as he unleased the 72nd minute free kick- but it sailed out of the ground!

For once it was the other team not taking their chances and they would soon pay the price we have often paid in previous games.

In the 76th minute, Dino replaced Jackson with Joe Anderson while Colchester brought on Edwards and Bishop for Goodwin and Payne.

A minute later, Barkhuizen unleashed a shot from range which went just high and wide, our second good chance of the game.

Rose was causing problems for the visitors and was being fouled for his efforts. Suddenly we were gaining corners and free kicks. Lisbie was still a potential problem down the other end, bringing another save from

Stanway in the 81st minute but seconds later down the other end Barkhuizen unleased a cross, forcing a Macey save from a close-range Newby shot.

A minute later, Colchester were back on the attack, Read shooting wide of the left post from outside the box.

The game was becoming stretched- and very entertaining. It seemed now one goal would win the game.

In the 84th minute Harper was pulled back gaining a McCann free kick. The free kick was not cleared and the ball fell to Canavan inside the box who sent the Barrow players and fans wild as it hit the back of the net.

Could Barrow hold out for 6 minutes of normal and what turned to be 6 minutes of added time? The answer was a resounding yes! Stanway made a crucial 86th minute block from Bishop immediately following the Barrow goal, and the whole team seem galvanised by his efforts.

A minute later Colchester sent on Williams for Back and Dino replaced Newby with Malcolm.

When tall goalie Macey came up for a Colchester corner in the 93rd minute, we held our breath but our defence cleared. The last four minutes saw all the Barrow team dedicated to gaining possession and getting the ball as far away from our goal- or into touch- as possible. This thwarted any further danger and Colchester players Araujo and Vincent-Young were booked for taking out their frustration on Barrow players near the popular side touchline.

Wyll Stanway was awarded Barrow’s man of the match for his clean sheet against the odds, with Rose putting in another particularly fine shift. The crowd was 2,321 including 154 Colchester fans.

After a team huddle at the final whistle, the whole Barrow team followed by Dino were given a lengthy ovation.

He would’ve been my MOTM, but when we win, it doesn’t matter. Wyll was excellent when called upon and deserved his clean sheet. Loved his reaction at the end. That’s how much it matters! Let’s take this into Tuesday now and put Harrogate to the sword.
