Is it the defence or Is stanway just not on the shots this season
I don’t know what’s happening with the defence and stanway I know the defence has a job to do which is to not let the opposition get shots off but we can’t or say none of it is stanways fault as some of the goals he has conceded This season he should have probably don’t better with but the defence needs to stay strong just need to hold on good luck to the lads as we face Cheltenham away on Friday hopefully we come away with 3 points up the barrow

The issues are as much at the other end of the pitch. ZERO shots on goal at home, in such a crucial game.
"To achieve anything and to get to the Football League, we have to expect to win every game. I've got to get everyone believing that we can, and I will work hard to embed that mentality into the players, the town, the board and whoever else” Ian Evatt.

I think Stanway does have the odd mistake.
Look at it this way how would you like the players in front of him defending.
Harper is terrible .
Previous games he lets players go past him, when he could actually tackle them
Today he had another one
He should be working in KFC

It's the inability to score goals that's the problem.

Yep. Have had the impression for some time that midfield players are just passing around aimlessly to get their completed passes stats up. They were largely non-existent yesterday. When was the last time you saw a midfielder drive forward with the ball and make something happen? Another one for our resident historian I think. I'm going with Kemi Badknockers or whatever he was called.

Bit surprised Winterbottom hasn’t been given a chance again tbh

Feels like that Bromley head injury has set him back not quite the same since.

Or maybe all the talk of a move!barrowfan_chris wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2026 5:11 pm Feels like that Bromley head injury has set him back not quite the same since.
Thought he was at fault for 2 against Fleetwood and the shot that lead to the corner right at the end yesterday looked like it was going wide.
He's had good games and the odd bad ones but those have cost us points. Personally I think he needed another season as an older head GK understudy and not first choice although i don't get why the other 2 lads aren't getting alook in.
You have all our defenders having bad spells or their injured so unless we get all these players back we are going to struggle.

Can't see us getting the 250k Bristol wanted to pay if we go down either. A shame Stanway turned them down looks like that might have been the best we could have gotten.LCBAFC40 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2026 5:18 pmOr maybe all the talk of a move!barrowfan_chris wrote: ↑Sun Mar 01, 2026 5:11 pm Feels like that Bromley head injury has set him back not quite the same since.

Re: Is it the defence or Is stanway just not on the shots this season
To answer the original question, it’s a combination of the two. Obviously you get individual errors, but ultimately at times, the goalkeeper, and protection in front of the goalkeeper, defence and also midfield, hasn’t been good enough. Not even close to good enough.
Making mistakes. Not tracking the runners. Poor positioning. Not being strong or ‘football intelligent’ enough to ‘take a yellow’ in worrying situations. Not having the effort, or stamina, to get there and make the tackle, intercept the pass or block the shot. Win the header, or that second ball. Staying ‘switched on’ for 90+ minutes. Being poor in possession, giving it away too much, far too easily.
Regarding Wyll Stanway, he’s made some mistakes, but probably not much more than a goalkeeper fairly early on in his career, as he is. It could be due to lack of confidence, or ‘switching off’ in games? The transfer speculation or concussion injury? I’m not sure if even he knows.
One area of his game which does need attention and improvement is his distribution. Often when he’s kicking the ball unchallenged, it’s going into an area where we don’t have anyone. So then coming straight back again!
Also, please can we stop this complete nonsense tactic of doing short goal kicks/free kicks, often involving Stanway and Canavan? We WILL get caught out doing this. They mess around, and the ball ends up getting hoofed up the field anyway, often then under pressure so, again, goes straight back to the opposition!

I thought he played well yesterday, the corner at the end notwithstanding.

Re: Is it the defence or Is stanway just not on the shots this season
If we do go down it’s not because of Stanway.
I personally would have kept Farman on but it was known for a while he was leaving, and earlier in the season people were raving about Stanway.
He’s still young in goalkeeping terms and has made mistakes but then so did Farman, but he was vocal and a big personality. We’ve missed that.
You can point to the lack of potent strike force, mistakes in defence, a midfield that doesnt win enough loose balls or can control the game pretty much the whole team to me before you can blame Stanway for too much.
