One of the favourites

Post by AugustusCorpa » Thu Jul 02, 2026 5:11 pm

to win the league..
Well we’re 12/1 on Oddschecker. Joint 5th in the betting.
Carlisle are favourites. No surprise there.

Will this season be the first time Barrow & Carlisle have played each other as non-league clubs? Pretty sure we’ve not been in the National/Conference league at the same time.

Looking forward to this season, I think we will see a completely different side to the one last season and I reckon we will be up the top end and competing!

What I do want this season is for us to turn them over and give us the bragging rights!!

Correct but not quite the first time Barrow & Carlisle United have played each other as non-league clubs.

'Carlisle United' came about in 1904 as a controversial rename of local amateur side Shaddongate United (founded 1896) to create a professional club. After a year, apparently playing friendlies against local sides in England and Scotland, they had two seasons in the Lancashire Combination Division 2, before joining Barrow in Division 1. They ended the season as runners-up (Barrow finished bottom) and chose to join the North Eastern League where they remained for 20 years.

In 1928, they replaced Durham City in League Division 3 North, joining Barrow, who had been founder members in 1921.

Carlisle United's next non-league spell was the single season of 2004-5 in the Football Conference National Division when they scraped through the play-offs to return to the EFL. Barrow spent that season in the Conference National League North.

The tables were turned in 2025-6 with Barrow in League 2 and Carlisle United, having been relegated from that league in 2025, in the National League. The season didn't end well for either club.

So, both clubs have played together in non-league for one season only - 1907-8.

Keep the bar high and we can have a great season.

The teams who take the most off Carlisle, FGR, Southend and Hartlepool will be well up there. Let that be us.

If we are doing well, and towards the top end as the season progresses, it will generate optimism and enthusiasm - a refreshing change from the last couple of seasons.

Far from a given though. NL is a tough league.

It’s actually fairly easy to get in the play offs these days, no reason we can’t do it, still just think we need a couple more real quality signings to properly compete though
Carlisle, Southend and Hartlepool will fill 3 of the top 7 places so there’s 4 to play for…..

We’re down to 8/1 joint third favourites now on Oddschecker.
Our 0-2 win against Holker hasn’t gone unnoticed.

I'm expecting mid table finish-but hoping for a lot better.
This is a new team that has to gel.
