If that's aimed at me, I never said "we will not have a club to follow"

Still only my opinion.

John Coleman is thinking about whether to approach Barrow AFC for the vacant manager post...

Thoughts on this?

I hope he does. He's the man I'd like to see take over.

Total non story from the evening mail they have gone around asking certain people if they are applying for the job - and then make a story out of it

John Coleman says he is unlikely to apply before the deadline in the story but is interested in returning to work so might enquire but might not -

Would be an excellent appointment in my opinion.

If we could get him, he would be a great asset. Look what he did at Accrington.

Really like what John Coleman has to say in the report. Views Barrow as a potential league club- "I have took a club lower than Barrow into the football league on a shoestring budget" and then to a league 2 play off campaign. But he throws in a challenge in by "How serious the the club are about being a league club remains to be seen".

If he hasn't formally applied yet then I hope the board still get to talk with him. This is a man who clearly knows what it takes and has done it with Accrington.

If the budget allows, either Coleman or Lowe would be my preffered choice's. I think both would send out good signals to the majority of stay away supporters & still excite most of the 650 that are left.

I say this obviously without knowing what their wage demands are & what our budget is, but we need to go for experience.

Just my opinion mind.

dcarradus wrote:might being daft here but how will we not have a club to follow as we are still one of the top 5 best supported clubs in this league it was expected the crowds would be down and they will stay that way until we start winning an moving up the table i thought the board did budget for around average of 700. people lose intrest and wont come back over night
There are numerous reasons why everyone should just completely ignore the crowds that other teams get compared to ourselves:
Other clubs have financial backers subsidising them,
They don't have to pay off things like a mortgage and other large debts,
We have to pay more to get players from away to come here seen as we don't have a team of locals that are good enough,
They are near large population areas (Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham) where its easier to pick up players from more cheaply, as opposed to ourselves,
They have better links with their fans and local communities and are better run etc

As well as results the complete lack of entertainment has driven many away in the last few seasons and while we're at it the way the board have acted has also contributed. There has been no incentive to go to home games but a combination of winning more frequently/playing a more entertaining style of football (along with the board not having a go at/misleading the fans) would be a start.

Out of interest why are we gonna speak to people who aren't applying (BK's comments in Mail)? I'm all for making certain candidates aware there's a vacancy and intimate we'd like them to apply but why are we gonna speak to those who haven't applied in the first place, most candidates will know the job's available? What's the point in having a deadline if the club are gonna try and persuade others to apply after the deadline has passed - clearly they didn't want the job in the first place?

The next appointment needs to be a long term appointment who will be given time to change the way the club is run with a view to developing our own players.

Getting another manager from 100+ miles away will not break the cycle we have been in for as long as I can remember.

Now is the time to change direction, not to just carry on like we always have.
I have only read this thread from p9 as threads like these are usually full of hot air , gossip, pure speculation & nothing much else until some meat appears on the bones, but then saw this and thought, yes, yes, YES.

IMHO Its the only way to go, get in a seasoned manager more FT than PT with a brief on sustainability and growth from within and move away as fast as possible from 95% of players, management & our hard earned leaving town & all 2 hours away and training 2 hours away, even if its drip fed in as we slowly rely on travelers less and less...........this is usually where others say posters like me want 100% of our players to be born on Holker St............IMHO nobody in reality wants that but many want a healthy mix of travelers and locals but only locals that are good enough on merit not on post code alone.

The work being done by these youth managers and various footy schemes should be applauded by all as our kids are finally getting quality coaching and education thus slowly bearing fruit that will finally hopefully make to board end the maddening cycle.

Use our isolation to our advantage & bring in the best man for the task.

A few seasons of foundation building and creating a buzz locally will reap dividends quicker than many would belive if everyone pulls in the same direction.

The Youth & Maintenance team are my only real interest in BAFC these days :|

Its the opposite to me if im being honest, how much money has been wasted at BAFC is mind-blowing when you do the math!!!

Bad stewardship annually drains tens of thousands out of our club & its got to stop.

Not sacking DB 18/12/6 Months ago has cost xxxxxxx as we have lost 40%+ of our support & financial input by said support & sponsorship, goodwill & suchlike.

Big chance to redeem some goodwill & support and a massive opportunity for our BoDs if they have the cajones to make it remains to be seen.

yes john coleman did do well at accrington but don`t forget he had eric whalley (local businessman) bank-rolling the club! his budget far exceeded others at the time so they could get the players they wanted, also the demigraphics of the conference have moved on,and i doubt with the way its set up now it would have panned out the same.also i don`t see teams offering him present positions!

What about when Eric Whalley got bored? He still did well with them despite the lack of money, ok it was a higher league than we are at present but the point still valid. The guy got Accy into he playoffs with a crap budget.

In an ideal world we could advertise for a manager & one would turn up who has all the right credentials, lives in Barrow, would want to stay here for ever, be the best manager we've ever had, he wouldn't fall out with players/supporters & play very attractive football but.....this isn't an ideal world & we don't have anyone anywhere near local (apart from Edmo who would just be wrong for the job) who could manage at this level.

No matter who we get, if he does well, even if he is local, he'll be headhunted by someone bigger & probably closer to his home (loyalty in football very rarely exisits) so he'll be off, that's the way of it.

So back to Paul's point - how do we get a long term appointment? How can ANY club be certain of a long term appointment? if your good you'll be off, if your bad the club (or supporters) will get rid of you

And Mike's point - a seasoned manager with a brief of sustainability & growth from within & to move away from players from out of our area. Where do we find a manager like that? every club would want one of them.

I'm not having a go at either of your points because I'd love it to work that way but in reality it really isn't going to happen.
